DRM question

Good day all,

I have some pdf books that I bought years ago. Now they are locked because of drm. Somewhere along the line they have been encrypted, I assume by Adobe. I had these long before and paid for them, I might add, long before this started. I have read a little on the net by goo ogling, however the only responses I have read by Adobe responding to people, have been rude at best, ridiculous at worst. Such as Adobe is a free program basically live with it. Adobe reader may be "free" , but my Ebooks were not. I don't have unlimited time on the net.

I was wondering if someone else has experienced this and what I can do about it. I just want to be able to read what I PAID for. Maybe if someone can give me the quick version of how they are able to do this and what I can do about it.
I would appreciate it.

I am not a programmer and like I said have limited time to explore the answer.

  • Hi Jim.

    Basically, you have some PDFs that have the open password set on them?
    So you can't read them. (as opposed to print, or modify)

      Not exactly. Adobe Reader 9 say's I need the digital editions to open (several) books.
      Then when I download and install it say's

      Breaking_Through_the_BIOS_B.pdf:
      Adobe DRM Error
      System: 7
      State: 4
      Class: 15
      Code: 31
      Message: Error on response from server.
      Scroll below or view error.log for more details.
      Your Adobe software could not be activated.
      HTTP error on Adobe DRM Activator request.

      Fault location: 15
      --- end ---

      This is just one of the books it won't open anymore, never asks for a password, never gets that far... as I said I was opening these books as far back as adobe reader5. And I have tried deleting the newer versions of Reader and installing the older one...doesn't work.

  • Unfortunately, I think you are basically stuck:

    Adobe Forums: PDF Import Error. Code 31. HTTP Code...

    DRM is designed to to be breakable.

    • I saw that forum, I was going to link to it in this thread if you needed more of an explanation. That really baffles me how they can do this. The books have basically nothing to do with them, (Adobe). If you read some more of the statements on that forum, you will see how difficult it is to deal with adobe about this issue. I have tried other readers (PDF), can't open anymore.
