Mysql question

I just got a horrible phone call, my virtual dedicated server has been down and I was just told that there was a hardware failure in the data center that took my as well as other hard drives with it.

I have 24 websites on this server of which I have current backups for about 10 of them. I've been so busy I haven't been keeping up on my backups...shame on me.

They were able to salvage all of my data but they are giving it to me loaded on a secondary drive. I basically have to rebuild everything but I have the old data to work with.

My question for anyone that might know, is it possible to retrieve anything from the mysql data directories to recover databases? The .frm .myd etc... files are in binary format. Can they be loaded into a reader or decoded somehow?

Thanks for any help! If someone has experience extracting mysql data I would be happy to hire you, I'm willing to put in the work but not everyone is willing to hand out that free advice. My number 1 priority right now is getting this server and the sites running again ;-)

  • Each directory was an individual database.
    If you load the same version of MySQL, generally you can directly read the files.
    It should recognize them.

  • Thanks guy's. Andre, I may take you up on that. My server is still being re-provisioned so I won't see what I have to work with till morning. My host told me they were able to salvage all my data so hopefully everything will be there...

      Just to let you know, buy the way, I find your situation very odd, I'm flabergasted to say the least, that you are placed in such a situation nowadays by a hosting company!!! Personally it's the first time I see this in my 12 years online. I also own a hosting service and do DAILY backups of all my acounts and any clients would be back up and running in a few hours without having to go into that nightmarish hassle.
