Do I need a merchant account?

I just got a self-hosted shopping cart script. Do I need a merchant account to accept credit cards? Which one is the best?

I would start by looking at what's supported by your shopping cart solution. Usually payments are implemented as plug-ins in shopping carts. See what plug-ins exist for your cart, read support forums to see if people have problems with them. All merchant accounts come with a minimum monthly fee, which you will pay no matter whether you had sales or not. You could also use services like PayPal, Google Checkout or Amazon Payments which could be free (no monthly fee) in some cases but charge slightly higher percentage of the sale and / or take visitors away from your site for check-out.
    Good luck.

Thanks! Looks like these are the supported ones.

      Which would you recommend?

I would use your Paypal account. Once you have the Paypal debit card you have access to the money instantly and yo get 1% cash back when you use the card. They have a merchant tool you can use too that is 24.00 a month I think.

    Good Luck

Indeed if Paypal is supported it's the best solution.
