  Open source, and free. But the best and most productive components for it are usually not free...
  
  Joomla! has a very steep learning curve. But as to versatility and robust extendibility, it blows WordPress out of the water. You will need a couple things just to begin--one of them being templates for the display of your front page.
  
  I recommend Rocket Theme. They are the leader in J! templates, and I have been developing around them for about 5 years now.
  
  Get yourself a Joomla! "how to" book as well. Frequent the Joomla! support forums. It's well worth it, especially for large or complex sites.
