You can design a website using WordPress, Joomla or Blogspot..

You can try Microsoft frontpage HTML editor software (available in microsoft office XP version) to build web pages with easy to use GUI options. If you know how to use MS-Word, then you're almost done with the usage of frontpage.

If you want to learn HTML or other programming stuff, then i would suggest you to go through with w3schools. It's a very good resource to learn the web programming stuff.

I like AceHTML - it's been a long time since I used it though.

Notepad. It might not be pretty, but it can do everything.

If you don't know much html/css you won't be able to really create professional webdesigns.

Your best bet would be to learn to install and use something like wordpress and download themes for it that fit your desired style. This would be a quick and easy solution.

The problem I see is that there is too much to learn. It seams like asking the question "I don't know how to fly yet, but want to fly F-16 fighter jets, is there any cheap F-16's available that are easy to use and come with step-by-step instructions?"

I started with a text editor and HTML. Its good to see the code working before you get any of the tools that go and create it for you automatically.

As you get better you can use tools to cut corners. Use php to handle replicating duplicate content, use CSS to separate design from markup.

Then step it up another gear, use dreamweaver with its WYSIWYG editor if you want to go down the design path, or PhpStorm if the logic interests you more.

You will find that Professionals are specialists. and each specialist has a specific set of specialist tools. these are "Professional Tools".

They are not all the same. Graphic designers probably dont use xdebug and a separate debugging server. Programmers might only use photoshop once a month.

Got to find what you like.

If you want to learn designing then start with Adobe Photoshop. You can see lot of videos on youtube and learn how to use photoshop.

For HTML you can learn from w3schools. This is the best site to learn for a newbie. Also you can use tryit editor and make changes accordingly.

If you are new then try with HTML .. As far as i know Dreamwave is for expert programmers ..

you can also use the artisteer, web seriff or dreamweaver for the best website design.

I didn't know (and still know very little) about web design, but I use and now show others how to use as many free resources as possible; NVU free software and Filezilla free software. I also use top IMer high converting squeeze page templates that were given to me so I give them away too. Paying it forward.

It took me a few days the first time, but now it only takes me a few hours and then I tweak it until I get the conversions I want.

Lets break this down.

You are speficially asking about web design, and not web development. There is a distinct difference between the two.

I'm going to assume, that you want to know about web design as opposed to web development. Please correct me if my assumption is wrong.



Web design are not the same as web development. Although some of the scope of web design may overlap with web development. This is generally not the case.

Web design in its strict sense is concerned with designing the layout, User Interface (UI) and general "look and feel".

Web design may also in some cases entail creating those designs.

The general process are in two parts. The first part deals with site design.

Designing a site is really the hardest part, because this requires creativity. Having a background in art and media is an extremely good fit for those interested in design.

In terms of tooling, at this stage, just basic things such as pen and paper should suffice.

During the design stage, ideas and concepts need to be explored. You may need to create multiple design ideas or "creatives".

The next phase is then refining those ideas until you arrive at a single design.

The presentation of these designs will mostly be done in a graphics application.

The industry standard is Photoshop, however there are many capable free and open source alternatives such as GIMP.

This is sometimes considered the remit of web design, in which case there will be the second step (creating the design).



Creating the design, requires creating all the assets (buttons, logos, sprites, images) of the site. These are done in graphics applications discussed above.

In some cases, the prototypes design ideas presented can be "spliced" directly into usable assets.

The design is then finally brought together with HTML and CSS.

This will usually be hand coded, or software packages such as "Dreamweaver" can provide a more WYSIWYG environment.

In terms of tools, hand coding HTML and CSS requires nothing more complex than a text editor. However, advanced features such as syntax highlighting, auto-completion etc. Help productively hugely, for this more advanced text editors such as Notepad++ or Gedit, or textmate can be used.

If there is reason to use Javascript (perhaps some parts of the UI require this) then it may be a good idea to use a full blown IDE (Integrated Development Environment).



Web Design generally has two parts

* Design Implementation (Part B)

In terms of tools

* Part A: Pen, Paper, Creativity, Photoshop/GIMP
* Part B: Photoshop/GIMP, Text Editor or IDE

Good design can not be learnt simply by using the tools alone. In order to understand good design one should learn these following areas:

* Human Computer Interaction (HCI)
* Media Studies, Marketing, Branding, Art

Always suggest Dreamweaver. I got nothing easier than Dreamweaver. Currently using CS5.

Well if you are a Beginner in this field i suggest you Photoshop and dream viewer as the best web design software for you.

I started off with Aardvark, as I didn't like all the extra coding Dreamweaver used. It took a long path to do things, but may have changed since then.

Web design isn't too much of an issue these days, and I would suggest making friends with WordPress. It is easier to adjust themes to fit the need as opposed to building from scratch. You can create far more than just blogs with it. The main thing for using this method is learning graphics design and CSS as WP does all the heavy lifting for you. The Add Widgets to Page makes setting up a site easy, as you can easily adjust positioning of anything that you want.

This allows you to get a feel for things, and, if you break a theme you can easily restart with a fresh download. As you get more comfortable you can expand the apps and programs that you use.

If you can not afford Photoshop get gimp at gimp.org. It is very much like PS and has a lot of scripts that can be added to help keep your graphics unique.

I can code a site in notepad in PHP/HTML/CSS, but why take the time when in 1/4 to 1/3 of the time I can adjust a WP theme?

I suggest don't go for learning dreamweaver (at least not yet). Go for learning basic stuff html, css, javascript etc. pick a simple editor like notepad++. Once your foundation is strong, then go for a full-featured ide like dreamweaver, eclipse or whatever you like.

I would prefer to use dreamweaver and photoshop for designing my static and dynamic websites

CoffeeCup is a great solution for people who do not want to spend ages learning programming languages and simply want to dive in and make great websites in an easy and effective manner.

I am a big advocate of dreamweaver. It has a lot of wysiwyg tools if you don't like code all that much, but works well as a code platform too, giving you a lot of time saving code hints and allowing you to build your site structure and access files easily. You can also connect it directly to a remote host and upload your files without having to use a separate ftp client. For quick edits I usually use BBEdit, but any plaintext editor will do if you know the syntax well. For images you can't beat photoshop but gimp is a good free alternative. Adobe Illustrator is also very nice for sleek vector graphics.

Dreamweaver and frontpage are good tool to build for your site. Although there are some free tools that you can also used if you search it in internet.

Photoshop is the best and easiest to design website.
