Question about Masking a Fowarded URL

4 replies
For SEO purposes, I am trying to mask a forwarded domain and I'm doing something wrong.

Here's what I have:

domain registar: godaddy
hosting: hostgator
platform: wordpress

What I want is when I forward website[dot]com to BetterSeoName[dot]com, I want BetterSeoName[dot]com to show in the url.

Hostgator told me to use standard html masking code, create an index.html and upload to main folder of my site. This didn't work.

In the past I simply used godaddy's forward/mask function - but was told this would not work because I am hosting the site elsewhere.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

    on godaddyjust do a dns redirect, like:

    yourremotesite.com -> BetterSeoName.com

    this is known as a CNAME record, if you have to enter it by hand, google CNAME. GoDaddy as your DNS registrar should have a FAQ. Your host guys, Gatorw/e, don't have control of your DNS.

      Or you could do a search for '301 redirect' -- that will work even if you don't have access to the DNS.

    GoDaddy's 'forward' function will work just fine for what you're wanting to do. You 'park' the domain at GoDaddy, leave the nameservers set to GD's default parking nameservers, then enter the URL you want the domain to forward to in the forwarding section.

    Thanks to everyone who responded. I contacted godaddy and there seem to be some issue on their end. They reset the forwarding/masking and now everything is working perfectly.
