PHP is easier to learn and is more compatible with different web servers.
ASP is sort of the old big business standard. ASP would be easier for a visual basic programmer to learn, while PHP would be easier for someone who is used to C/C++.

If you want to run a light weight site, you're probably going to be best off using a light weight webserver and PHP.

PHP is also much more flexible in terms of database connectivity, such as built in functions for mysql (free database).. and as IMmoney says it is quite easy to learn, even if you are new to programming.

Actually for users it doesn't matter whether you apply PHP or ASP.NET. Yet PHP is a bit easier for a programmer. I guess there are much more PHP programmers in the world cause it takes less time to learn))
Mostly light weight pages are created on PHP, ASP.NET allows more functionality and allows develop complicated pages.

I would prefer php because it has many advantages over simple asp.

PHP codes runs much faster than ASP.
Most php tools associated with programs are open source.
php syntax is similar to c/c++ language.
PHP programs can also run in Windows, Solaris, Unix and Linux.

My personal experience has been that they are quite similar in terms of difficulty. for me some aspects of PHP are a little more straightfoward even though the syntax is Messier. However, I also find the asp.net code to be more organized / easier to read. anyway it's just at the beginner level and based on my personal experience.

ASP is great if you're charging someone else by the hour. For developing projects for yourself, you'll save a lot of time using PHP.

PHP. Don't bother with ASP, unless you can afford to develop with Visual Studio and ASP.Net. If you can, though, ASP.Net is great and incredibly powerful and the Visual Studio IDE is hands down the best IDE out there.
ASP, as in Non .Net VBScript ASP that comes with IIS, is pure garbage by today's standards.

I think PHP is the best software for creating the light weighted web pages or websites as PHP is very simple language to learn; also the PHP web sites can run on different web servers.

Both ASP and PHP are languages used to build Dynamic Web sites that can interact with Databases and exchange information. ASP (Active Server Pages) is from Microsoft and is used with IIS (Internet Information Server) that runs on Microsoft Servers.

Lightweight? How about good old plain-jane html? If the site is static, you don't need any programming language other than html.

It really doesn't matter. Each has advantages and disadvantages. The answer depends on what you are trying to achive.

Just use what you know. Personally, I like asp.net C# because it has lots of great commercial things that cut my programming time in half (like llblgen) drool.

On an opinion basis I think PHP is an ugly language It's main advantage is that all the open source CMS use it.

Well, PHP can be used on both Windows and Unix, whereas ASP is windows only. (or very difficult to get going on unix, gotta install mono, etc.. a big hassle).

what this means is that say you have a website using PHP and you have to change hosting, you have a much wider choice since you can port your code to a windows or linux server without much trouble.

If your site uses ASP, you're basically fcuked, gotta go with a windows server.

Hence, PHP is clearly the winner here. Plus, ever try to set up per folder access restrictions on an ASP site? nightmare. PHP -> htaccess, friggin' nice.

    Cheers,
    WP4H
