Has Anyone Used OpenPanel as the Control Panel for VPS?

I need to set up a vps for some email software I have developed. Most vps offer Cpannel at an additional costs. I have been looking at OpenPanel to use instead of CPanel. Has anyone used it, if so how easy was it to install and matain.

I just downloaded it and installed it. It's not very impressive or useful in my opinion. It's very pretty; there are 14 available wallpapers to decorate the admin interface . But it doesn't do much.

I recommend you go with Virtualmin/Webmin to manage a VPS as it is a much more evolved application that gives you fine control over every aspect of your server.

I am a bit nervous about vps but am at the point I need one. which is the easiest to install . Again, I have never done this so it needs to be simple so I can learn how it all fits.

Have you considered paying for a managed VPS? If you did that, you wouldn't have to get your hands dirty.

As far as ease of installation, I don't think anything comes close to installing virttualmin with their official install script. It's pretty much a hands off installation on any of the operating systems they fullly support. You'd basically just run the script, type "yes" at one point, then the install finishes on its own and you can log in.

Which VPS provider are you using BTW? Also, which operating system?

That Openpanel you mentioned wasn't difficult to install, but it didn't have all the features I'd need. You might be happy with it. Why not install it, and if you don't like it you can just reinstall the operating system on your VPS?

Oh, and you also might want to check out:

You also might ask your VPS provider if they offer a "Host in a Box" Operating System image which would give you a CentOS install with Kloxo server control panel already installed. In other words, you wouldn't have to install anything.

You know a lot about this I know nothing. I am wanting this vps to act as a proxy server for some software I have put together. It seems that all the hosting companies want an additional fee for any type of control panel. that is the reason I started looking for one f my own. (The control panel costs $240.00 a year additional.)

I have been talking to Atlantic.net Who is BTW or can you suggest one?
The hosting company uses Centos 5 software.
Do you use Virtualmin "Free" or Pro?

I really appreciate the assistance because until I get this solved I can not go forward with my software.

        Thank You

I recall that you posted in another thread about using a VPS as a mail proxy. If that's the case, I don't think it would be good to go with Atlantic.net. From Atlantic.net's FAQ:

To protect the integrity of our cloud from spammers, we currently block sent mail from our cloud servers. If you require the ability to send mail from your cloud servers, please contact support with a description of your justification and we will unblock outgoing mail.
Linode offers VPS hosting for prices close to what you'd pay at Atlantic.net. I've used Linode and their service was excellent. Linode sells unmanaged VPS packages, but they have lots of support documentation and a good community. Linode is good if you're a beginner.

CentOS is a good operating system. I prefer Debian though. Either of those, you can't go wrong.

As far as Virtualmin, I use the open source version as it has every feature I need. In my opinion, it is the best server control panel because it gives you control over every nitty gritty detail of your server's operation.

Of course you might not need a control panel at all. As a mail proxy, you might consider Nginx for which there doesn't exist any control panels.

Anyhow, it seems you're new to this. It would perhaps help if you practiced some bit on a VPS or an old computer before you go live. Here's a site I found just a minute ago which may help you Setup Unmanaged VPS 4 Linux Noobs! - vpsBible

I really appreciate your assistance. I look at these suggestions. Would you mind if I came back to you with some questions if I run into problems.

The support at Atlantic.net said they had lost of people using vps as mail proxy. However they also said they wanted me to take a more expensive server. I did not want to do this until I could see if the product would sell or not.

    Again, Thanks for your help.

Do you have any idea what I could use for a mail proxy server. I need something that my software can connect to. I was hopin vps would do it but I might be getting in over my head.

I use OpenPanel 1.1.2. I'm not sure how it works (or if it even works) for VPS, but I use it for Apache Virtual Hosts. OpenPanel is easy to install. Here is a tutorial on how to install it on Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit:

Open panel looks attractive but its functionality is not that impressive as one would expect.
