Quick Wordpress Question: Blocking Domain Names

Hi guys,

I come here looking for the help of people much smarter than myself!

I currently have a buddypress website, and I have a number of spam accounts signing up a lot at the minute. These accounts are using email addresses from the same domain name.

For example:

idiotspammer@baddomain.info
idiotno2@baddomain.info
spammer@baddomain.info
etc

You get the idea.

What I was wondering is; are there any settings where I can block people with specific domains in their email address from signing up? I am sure I have seen it/done it before, but it was a while ago and I can't remember.

Does anyone know of a plugin for this? I have asked this question over at buddypress sites as well, but I am coming up short with answers, so I thought Id ask the brain boxes here at the Warrior Forum!

Any help would be massively appreciated.

Cheers

Alex

  • If you're on a multisite install, you can access Site Admin > Options through the Wordpress Administration and list the domains you wish to block.

Settings > Discussion also has a blacklist, but this will only prevent comments etc, not stop them from registering in the first place.

Another solution would be to implement a reCAPTCHA if you haven't already; this would only stop automated signups, but may go some way to helping the issue.

Other than that you're looking at coding something custom; a good example can be found at Quick Tip: Add Banned Email Domain Check to Multisite BuddyPress Registration - BuddyPress Forum - etivite :: \

  • Are you on a dedicated or VPS server? If so, you can block an IP or domain via firewall settings
