Hostgator/cPanel/Fantastico/WordPress question

From what I can understand, if I delete a WP administered domain name from my cPanel, I cannot reinstate it to WP later... is this correct?

I want to try a few things by running (uploading/editing) a site through my web editor and upload through file manager (or legacy file manager) instead, but ideally I'd like to know that I can go back to running it on WP if I want to.

I use Hostgator's Fantastico WP self-host option.

Also, is it possible to run a WP site on a second level domain, i.e. mydomain.com/product (or mydomain.com/product.html); I'm assuming not, and that WP has to run on a TLD.
?

Thanks

WP can run anywhere you install it.

I wouldn't delete it. Just move it or make a new folder for /testing/ to do what you want and then if you dont like it delete it.

Well, I have to admit, I hate confusing "terminology"...

You do NOT administer a domain with/by WP. You install WP on a domain.

Next, you can have WP installed anywhere on your domain:
    root = example.com
    subfolder/subdirectory = example.com/subfolder/
    even sub-subfolder = example.com/something/whatever/
(No, it can NOT be example.com/something.html - that's a file, not a directory!)

Why don't you try to "other things" in subdirectories?

And I would learn to use a decent FTP client (like Filezilla) instead of struggling with the file manager gizmos...

      whoah! Thanks, but steady on!

I'm only a little tech-literate, hence my (maybe wrongly worded) question. What's prompted my question is this warning in cPanel...

      "Last warning!

The installation in the root directory of oneofmydomains.com and the MySQL database and MySQL user named xxxxxxxx will be deleted.

You can't undo this! Click on Remove WordPress to proceed."

      So what does
      "You can't undo this!"
      mean?

I'm happy using FZilla FTP or cPanel.

      Thanks

Ian - it simply means that your original installation of Wordpress (including the database and database username/password associated with that installation) will be gone forever.

You may then re-install a completely "fresh" Wordpress installation.

        Hey Ian,
        "Last chance... will be deleted"

Yipes! First thing, take a backup of your entire website right now. Next, contact Hostgator support ASAP. It sounds like they may be canceling your account for some reason.

Back to your technical questions. I use hostmonster.com and they use simplescripts instead of fantastico. I have the option to "import" a wordpress install so I bet fantastico has something similar.

Also, even with wordpress installed, you can certainly edit your own HTML or PHP files. You can just upload the file and hit it up with your browser.

        Hope this helps!

My advice is make things easy for yourself... create a new directory and move everything over rather than delete the domain and end up running into issues.
