A few Wordpress Database questions

Hi Guys,

I've started a review web site as a wordpress blog and want to keep it to the blog format with comments etc rather than revert to a forum. I've never used wordpress as a database before but i need to be able to market to people who subscribe etc...

Is this easy to do? If so any advice on how? Or, should i really make a forum instead?

  • Just place and optin form somewhere, use a user-system, and you are all good to go

    • Do you mean something like Mail Chimp or Awebber?

  • You can use this plugin for the opt in box...it also has an autoresponder..

About the login box, Wordpress comes with user registration, enable user registration in your Dashboard >> Settings >> General and then use this login box..

  • Cool schwarzes - the blog is a review type product, where an initial review is written but then readers are invited to also review products. So i've turned on forced registration to the web site, will look at the sidebar login.

Will that make it easy to collect a database of names also that i can later market to? Or is that where i need to get teh autoresponder set up?

    • First of all... your use of the word "database" is a bit loose... like when you say "using WordPress as a database". Since WP uses a MySQL database to store your content - this could result in misunderstandings.
You don't have "A few Wordpress Database questions" as your title suggests, you have "how to build a list" questions.

Now, as for the legality of using 'forced registration' to put commenters/contributors on your mailing list - that's a different question.
Unless you EXPLICITLY clarify before registering that you would use their data for marketing to them... you should NOT assume that by registering to your blog they agreed to receive junk/spam mail from you! Because they didn't.

Just by registering to be able to post a comment/guest-post, normally, WP users don't expect to be placed on a marketing mailing list.

This plugin will help you collect name and emails for your mailing list. You can send out newsletters to the subscribed people and it also has a built-in auto responder.

The plugin also has a widget which will place an opt-in form in the sidebar.
