Would a backlink built into my software have any SEO benefits for my website?

I know this is probably a dumb question but I've always been curious about this. Basically, if I have a piece of software developed and it has a link to my website in the "footer" area of the application, (not sure what to call it) would there be any kind of SEO benefit to that? I know for sure it might bring in some direct traffic if the user clicks on the link, but I was curious if that would count as a backlink in some way.

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. I'm a complete noob when it comes to software development.

Thanks

Unless it's a web app, I don't see it having any SEO benefit, because search engines wouldn't be able to crawl it.

However, its value would be in encouraging the users of your software to click through and visit your site.
