I thought it might be interesting to discuss the Top Ten types of Plugins used with wordpress and perhaps even cover some of the best of those types of plugins.

S0, what are the Most essential Types of plugins that most wordpress users should be using when developing a wordpress based website.

Before you answer, lets say that we want a type of plugin first then suggestions of the best plugins that do the best job, Free is best, but we can also discuss premium as long as there is a lite or free version too.

I am interested in types of wordpress plugins that exist that save the "average" user time and effort without sacrificing page load times or interfering with other plugins, I think that is important, when your looking at different plugins.

Since we are talking about plugins that we consider essential, the first type of plugin that comes to mind is one that you need to have if you want to get in the good graces of Google and that is to have a site-map that automatically updates itself daily, there are a lot of sitemap plugins and for the most part it is really more about how often you update your website then using Google tools,)

So over the next few days lets have a discussion about which plugins (free plugins) are the best plugins for most wordpress users.

So lets add to this list and see if we can come up with a TOP Ten list of types of plugins.

1. Sitemap

    • Thanks for the Dagan Design that looks like an interesting plugin, there is currently a slight conflict issue with All in one SEO, for some users, not sure what the problem is but I am sure they will figure it out, I had to deactivate it because it was causing some issues with my other plugins, thanks for the post,

  • Added Delete post revisions,

Every time you edit a post and even when you take a long time to write a post, Wp will automatically revise and or store a copy of your post, this can result in a lot of storage and or overhead in your database,
  • Which is the best plugin so you can insert your google analytics & webmaster tools account information with? Or is that covered under the SEO plugin?

    • Good question, I really liked the web ninja GA but with the last two updates to wordpress I noticed that my Admin page loads were really taking a long time, so it might be that when you have a lot of pages your data could be taking a long time to poll.

I like the features of web ninja, anyone know of a competing plugin?
  • Yes seo are good for choice.
  • Just found this editor this morning, after I spent 20 min on a post and it got wiped out by the tiny mc default Wordpress editor, I wanted to scream, instead I went on a hunt for a better editor, it may not be perfect for everyone, but I can tell you one thing it sure works for me.

here is the link if your interested.

    • The only problem, a lot of the plugins that work directly w/ posts (by adding buttons to the tinyMCE editor) won't work with a different editor (right away in the comments you can see people saying how their add-on plugins don't work with this editor.

That would nix the thing for me. I have a number of these plugins that I live off of...

  • Basically it is a community list of useful plugins, which will probably change over time as more users share their favorite plugins and tips for using them.

The list will probably change in the way it is presented but thanks for the reply.

    • Most are linked, I have about 12 plugins that I use all the time, really anything that makes your job easier using wordpress is what users want,

I have been laying back allowing other users to post to build up a list that over time may become more interesting, for example, the SEO all in one plugin, breaks some custom plugins that interact in the admin section, same with GA ninja, which gets stuck in a recursive loop, still it might work for other users, the point I think is to share with other wordpress users what we like about certain plugins and how they make our jobs easier, that is really worth while to me, with over 40 sites running you need every edge you can get.
