Linking a database to Wordpress

Let me try to explain what I'm looking for, and hopefully you can help me refine my request.

I have an events listing on my page, the only one of its kind in a targeted sports niche. I get a TON of SEO traffic and this page is helping me become an authority in this niche. Good stuff.

BUT...so far I have over 100 events, and I'm manually editing the html in a wordpress page. Weak.

I want to take my site to another level for next year, and would like to move away from a flat list page and more towards something with some search functionality.

So instead of arriving on my flat Wordpress page and having to control+F for their state, I'd like a drop down for state. Same for dates, countries, etc. Then they could push a "refine" button that would return the events that pertain to their criteria.

I've worked with wordpress, html, Access, etc...but I think this one is a bit over my head. I'm fine with outsourcing if I have to, but not even sure what kind of programmer to request. Plus I'd love to take a stab at this myself. How hard is something like this?

My site is seasonal, so I have a few months to get this done.

Beginners PHP book should help you get that done, but you might want to do some digging for an events plugin for wordpress.
