I just saved a Word document into a pdf file. I need to upload it to my server in order to send it out to my customers but I have no idea how to do that. Can someone help me?

Thanks,
MJ

  • Hi MJ,
There are 2 ways to upload your pdf files to hosting server
    1. Using File Manager utility provided by your web hosting company. Log into your control panel and look for File Manager.
    2. Use File Transfer Protocol (FTP) software such as FileZilla (its free). You install this on your computer. It lets you connect to your server.

With either option you can upload or download any files.

  • Hi mjblondie,
    1. Open your favorite FTP program. Filezilla is a good free standalone FTP client.
    2. Enter your FTP server name as the host. Your hosting service usually provides an FTP host address and tells you your user name and password.
    3. Input your provided user name and password. Click "Connect" in your FTP client to connect to your web server. You will see the web server's file directory on the right hand side of your screen.
    4. Navigate to the folder or directory you would like to upload the PDF file to. Select the file you would like to upload from the left side of your screen, under the file listings for your computer. Some FTP clients may have a "Browse" button that you can click to locate your file.
    5. Double-click the PDF file on your computer that you would like to upload. Most FTP clients will automatically begin the uploading process. Your FTP client will tell you when the upload is complete.
You can give your clients a link: yourdomain.com/foldername/filename.pdf

    OR

To make it look more professional you can add a button/image to your site and link it to the button so when they click on the button your clients can download it.

    Hope that help

  • I followed all the instructions above and when I tried to type the URL in the browser and click on it, it went to my web page and not the file I directed it to. What am I doing wrong?

    • How were you going to do it with the Word document :p
  • Which webpage did it go to?

For example, when you typed domain.com/folder/filename.pdf (assuming you put it in a folder), did it show you just domain.com? Or did it show you a blank page?
  • Use FileZilla to upload the file in a directory. Use the address as the link. Example,
    domain.com/xyzfolder/filename.pdf

    • I saved the Word document into a pdf document. Then I copied the pdf into a zip file. From there I uploaded it to my server under public_html. I typed in the following to my browser: jminternetoffers.com/public_html/1,000.pdf
I get my original web site. I tried making a new folder in the public_html folder but was unable to do it, there were no options.
  • I had to modify my link and save the pdf in a zip folder. It works when I click on the URL but comes up asking to either save or open in Windows explorer. I guess this is better than nothing until I can find a way to change it from a zip to a pdf.
thanks for all your help. Still taking suggestions.

  • You can upload it through FTP.

  • I'd upload the PDF to Google docs and share that folder.

    • I did that but needed to save it to a zip file or it wouldn't show up in my browser.
  • i also recommend you file zilla, i also use this.
  • That's what I'm using. I find it easy to use but the problem is me, not the program! )
  • PDF file to uploading in the your server to using the Use File Transfer Protocol (FTP) software such as FileZilla . That software is free for using . It install on your computer and send it to your server.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • In most FTP Software you have to double-click around to navigate your way through to get to the folders on your computer you want, and also on the web server.

Once the correct directories are found, you can then upload the PDF, even if it is Zipped.

I would not save it as anything but filename.zip as I have found others who zip it as a .rar file which end users may need special software for to unzip it.

I have Win 7 and I can unzip anything, as long as it is not a .rar file. This is a feature of Win 7. However, Win7 cannot zip, only unzip.

By zipping it, you have added a security feature. They have to download it first, then unzip it to view the contents.

If they dont know what it is, they will find out when it is unzipped.

If you left it as a .pdf online then it could be viewed online and also found in search engines.

I looked on your page and they have to opt-in to receive it, so this is a good thing to do.
  • Thank you so much Thinkrich, this is very good advice, I really appreciate it.

    • You can also use Serverside languages like: php, perl, python to upload files to your server.

If you are using a CMS, then this possibility might be hidden somewhere in the settings.
