Screen capture on Windows XP

hi,

forgive the dumb question but can someone pls tell me which of the F keys is for static screen capture?
also is there a built in recording setup for videos included within Windows XP?
if so how do i access it?
if not which free recording setup would you recommend and how do i find/download it?

    It's a freeware program, doesn't take up much drive space, not a system hog, and is my screenshot program of choice for static screen captures.

      is there one you can recommend for non-static capture? eg. video?

  • Your screen capture key is just to the right of the f keys. I have a desk top and it is just above my delete key, to the right of f12.

    If you want your whole screen, just press that key and then paste it into a graphics program. If you want the open screen (if that might not take up the whole screen) press the Alt key along with the Prt Screen key.

      Thanks mate - you're obviously a genius but.......
      I found and pressed the PRTSC button just to the right of F12
      What is supposed to happen? Nothing.....
      Or am i supposed to do something in addition to this?
      Where will it be filed or recorded exactly?

  • You can also use the "Prt Scn" button usually in the top right on laptops.
  • Press Print Screen, open Paint, then press Control+V (or Edit>Paste). Your screen capture will be in the Paint doc, then save it or edit it as you like.

    It is free and if you want to use premium software, then Camtasia Studio is great choice. Hope this works for you
  • There is a key named as "print screen sysrq" just press it and paste in paint or anywhere.

    • I'm just gonna compile what everyone has said (mostly) into one easier to read area for ya regarding static captures using prntscreen:

      1. Press Prntscrn, or hold ALT + press prntscrn. Without the ALT key, your entire screen is captured including the taskbar and your browser windows (you may want to take anything personal out) You can use the ALT + prntscrn to leave your taskbar out, or take a picture of a non-maximized window and only capture the window itself. This works for anything on your screen, so if you have windows media player open and you want to take a picture of your playlist, you can use the ALT method to just capture that program. Just use the normal prntscrn if you want to cut out an area of a window.

      2. Open MS-Paint, and press CTRL+V to paste your screenshot in. It will automatically resize the canvas to fit it, and you can immediately just save it. JPEG would be the smallest file size you want.

      3. You can take a screenshot of your entire screen and use MS-Paint's Crop tool. Just drag out a box around the area you want to crop, and the crop button will become available to click. Clicking it will automatically take the rest of the image out of the picture, and then you can just save that.

      4. You can also paste any of these things into another program like word or photoshop, but they have varying options afterwards. Your best bet is to save a JPEG of your screenshot in paint, and then work from there. Especially if you want to capture a whole screen and crop out multiple parts, or draw on the screenshot to highlight things something.
