Have an Idea Need a Product Developer!

I have an idea for a program I would like made. My concern is where do I find the best? I was thinking odesk. My biggest concern is that how do I prevent the developer from stealing my idea! Also what are the steps do doing this from someone who has done it?

do a little research and outsource to several programmers different components of the program - although it depends ... is it a web app ? a windows software ?!

not to mention that chances are someone else already came up with this idea and even if they didn't ... once you get your program finished and it turns out to be good 50 other clones will come along - some of them probably better promoted than yours ...

you can't keep an idea for yourself in the online world ... the only thing you can do is ride it for as long as you can and then jump to another one .

People can steal code, but they can't steal ideas... Don't let the fear of a shady hacker prevent you from producing your idea.

Odesk is good, make sure you interview them properly. You can also try the international sections of Craigslist to find programmers.

If you can explain in detail the features of you website app, you won't give away the overall idea.

Last but not least, odesk has an NDA option too.

You can search a developer on elancing.net and only give the details to one person that is qualified.

Drop me a PM with your email. I can't send PM only after 50 posts.

as an added idea ... i find it true that what you pay is what you get.

more money equals stronger principles equals safety for your product and a better result.

    not always, but usually.

the idea is to find the balance between affordable and expensive and go for that if you can.

Maybe you could find a a friend of a friend who can code?
    I think that's an option.
otherwise you might think of asking them to sign some documents.

Are you using WordPress? Have you tried qSandbox yet?

I recommend making and having the coder you use sign a non-compete agreement that is specific to the idea, and a non-disclosure agreement that covers the duration of the coding of the project.

But for both of these to be effective it is recommended that you get a coder that is based on the USA, like myself.

As that way you can enforce any violation of the agreements easier.

      A few points...

I'm not sure exactly how you meant this, but stealing IDEAS is probably the easiest thing in the world to do. If yours is a truly revolutionary idea I'd be very careful as to whom you told it to.

But likely it isn't - no offense to the OP intended. As a software developer I have had dozens, if not hundreds, of people coming to me with their "great ideas", and there have been a few repeats already. Ideas are a dime a dozen. A concrete plan with practical steps to turn an idea into reality is another story, and if you have that then you're one of the few who has taken their idea to the next level.

NDA's and Non Competition documents are always a good idea, but they aren't bullet proof protection. And while it is true that the NDA will be more enforceable if signed between parties who are in the same country (or even better, in the same state or province) it is still not 100% protection.

Also, as the OP has not shared his location with us he/she may not even live in the US!

Being a developer I've always been on the other end of this kind of transaction. If I were you I'd consider placing an advertisement in this forums Help Wanted section, giving an outline of the skills you require and a rough estimation of the complexity of the job. Well I'm sure that there are likely fine coders on odesk as well, the Warrior Forum has an advantage in that you can evaluate your prospective coders reputation by looking over their previous posts. And if it is someone who has been here for a while and who actively posts you probably won't get scammed, as they wouldn't want to put their reputation on the line.

Best of luck in your quest!

      Bill

In general, you don't need to worry about developers stealing your ideas. Ideas don't make money, good marketing does, along with having a good product in the first place. Most developers don't have a clue where to get started with good marketing, or if they do, they lack the time or motivation to do so. Unless they are great promoters themselves, they are likely just focused on moving onto the next project.

Also, stealing a client's idea for a product presents a total conflict of interest, and no ethical developer will do this, even if only for selfish reasons, being the fact that there is potential future profit in maintaining the source code of your project.

As pointed out, you could always require an NDA, though this is not a total guarantee of protection.
