Uploading Wordpress Plugins

Would it be easier to use a FTP program rather than the Cpanel upload for uploading themes and plugins?

My host is Hostgator
My main domain is a website
My Wordpress is an addon in the same account

I had a heck of a time uploading a theme to my addon domain.

Now It looks like plugins are going to be a nitemare if I do the same. I've been reluctant to even try to add any plugins.

tks

  • I think if you have the 2.7 version of WP you can upload plugins from the admin. Maybe I'm wrong, but don't think so. Check it out.

  • @burtf1951 - you should not have had the problems that you have experienced. I use hostgator and add on domains and its a breeze. If you want to watch some vids I have some on YouTube here: YouTube - learningwordpress's Channel

In WP 2.7 you can install plugins direct from the admin panel just go to Plugins/Install New. You can also search for plugins on the Wordpress/Extend there as well and install directly. You cannot install themes directly unless you use a plugin like One Click Plugin Updater. If not, you need to install themes via ftp or cpanel.

    All the best

    • Thank you so much Sonni for replying, and Leanne I especially appreciate the information. I've just been on the "yoast" blog and also got sick.

Whoa, I don't know that I'll ever get all the work done under the hood to get my WP up and running smooth.

      Thank you both so much,

      Burt
  • I'm always use the cpanel to upload my plugin actually. Normally I just put all the files in one zip file and upload it to the plugin directory. Once uploading done, just use the function extract at the cpanel to extract the zip file and you're ready to go to activate it!..
Anyway, as someone mentioned above, there's new feature that allow user to upload plugin directly from our admin panel on WP 2.7 but never try it yet
  • I upload with FTP on my hostgator account. I am using wordpress 2.6 though, not sure if you can actually use 2.7 admin panel for that.
  • If you're going to install a lot of plugins together, the best way to do it is via FTP. The time it takes to upload is usually the same but it requires far less number of steps as compared to doing it with cPanel.

As a sidenote, upgrade to WordPress 2.7 It's AWESOME! You'll love the new features once you get used to the new admin interface (it's cool, took me 30 minutes to understand AND fall in love).

  • I use an ftp program called flashfxp. You can get a free 30 trial which seems to last for months at FlashFXP by iniCom Networks - FTP Client Software It is a great program, and easy to use. If you have multiple sites, it stores all your domain names, so uploading to any of your sites is a snap. After the 30 day trial which never seems to end, you can buy the program for $29.95

  • Go with FTP. It's easy and it's how the pros do it lol

Get Filezilla. It's free and I wouldn't even consider using a different FTP program.

  • I use total commander Total Commander - home. It's free and easy to use. Ftp is the quickest way. Sonni is right about wordpress 2.7. You can just browse to the file on your hard drive and install the plugin through wordpress. I've done this a few times and it works pretty well.
  • Hello,
I use a free FTP Client software program. Here is a link to a video tutorial for uploading plugins and themes to a wordpress website and how to get this free software.

This is one of many video tutorials that we give to our ebay customers that purchase our turnkey wordpress websites. You are welcome to view this.

    Uploading With FTP Software

I think this will be very helpful if you haven't figured it out yet.

  • Hi,

Personally I use ftp for to install all the plugins for my wordpress blogs, but then I'm 'old school' I actually don't like cpanel, not that it's a bad tool, it isn't. I've just been working so long with unix/linux systems getting my hands dirty so to speak that I can get things done far faster if I do it myself rather than use cpanel.

As to ftp tools, I lean towards either filezilla or wsftp though if you're not very technical I'd stay with the tools you now have with WP 2.7 it should make things much easier.
