I have a friend who is looking for a simple, free program that will allow him to create a basic system to calculate how many products he has of about 6 different types in his inventory, add extra when he receives more, deduct products when they are sold and also produces invoices.

He doesn't want anything as complicated as a database, e.g. Access or anything like that. But something perhaps a little more complicated than an excel spreadsheet.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

is he looking for desktop solution or SAAS?
also, some kind of a database will be needed even if it is a simple text file..
