Godaddy Or Hostgator ?

Hey Warriors,
Needed a small suggestion. I was wondering which web host I should be choosing this time. I am basically looking for a shared hosting. I have a site that very frequently makes a database requests.
Which web host do you suggest me to go for ?
Whose support team is best, Godaddy or Hostgator ?

Thanks
Please share your views.

    Neither.

If you have a site that very frequently makes database requests shared hosting might not be the best route.

As for support in a shared environment, I've been using Site5 and have been happy.

Either way, DEaFeYe is right, never get anything other than domains from GoDaddy.

Thank you all for your valuable suggestions

One thing i liked about GoDaddy is their max simultaneous MySQL connection limit.

check this link: What is the maximum allowed connections for your Shared Hosting Accounts? - Search the Go Daddy Help Center

(They allow upto 50Max simultaneous MySQL connections in Economy Plan)

I am not sure about hostgator. Does anyone here know max simultaneous MySQL connections limit in hostgator ?

hehe, that does not make sense at all, even if you try their 4G hosting for double MySql concurrent connections. All fakeeeee!!! your application will not have a chance to enjoy that much database connections because of their hosting downtime. Please prefer my post or else you may wast your time with GD hosting: xxxx://forum.tinyray.com/viewtopic.php?f=129&t=285

I use BlueHost currently but it has some issues every now and then. I've worked with sites that are using GoDaddy and I'm not too fond of them. GoDaddy likes to try to upsell you on services. I've never used HostGator but I'm curious on how well they work. I also heard Media Temple is another good host.

I also use bluehost and recently I've noticed that the sites go down once in a while between 12am and 4am EST. I don't think it was much of an issue before but I've seen it happen a few times in the past few weeks. Still though, in all it seems great and I love the live support. Plus the price is cheap and I also got a decent price on an ssl.

I've used hostgator for a bit and had no problems. I don't remember why I picked bluehost over them at the time but I would be willing to use either one.

Godaddy definitely will sell you anything but hey live and learn. They'll sell you trademarked domains, tell you that cash parking is a good idea for 3 domains, encourage you to auction domains that have little chance of getting views let alone bids, whatever. We just have to make smart decisions ourselves and learn from the bad ones.

I have several domains hosted on 50webs and I absolutely love them. I rarely ever see downtime and I've trusted them with my main business site for 5 years now. The only thing is that you can only have basic sites on the free plan (so no contact forms or anything involving user input into the site, which cuts out a lot of things and I'm pretty sure you can't do a wordpress site with the free plan). But it is great for adsense sites or affiliate sites if you don't need comments or contact forms. I can build a pretty clean site with html and css so I'm not completely reliant on wordpress but even if you can't there are plenty of free designs out there.

And of course you could pay for hosting on 50webs too...it's a little pricier than bluehost and hostgator, or at least it was when I went for a paid service or I would have used them, but with the recent problems at bluehost I might check them out again. I don't believe they have 24/7 support but they answer emails within 24 hours usually. But anyway I'd use them for all sites that don't require wordpress and then go with either hostgator or bluehost for the other stuff. I can't personally attest to hostgator's support so I'd evaluate what everyone else says, but I can say that I've gotten help from bluehost's live chat on countless occassions at all hours and have always gotten the response I needed for a range of simple and complex issues.

According to Mike Filsame in the Butterfly Marketing Confidential Manuscript GoDaddy will take ownership of your domain if you get a spam complaint. in his own words

"They [GoDaddy] are the only service I know that will take ownership of your domain if you get a spam complaint. This is worse than your host shutting you down. If this happens, they own the domain, lock out your account and will not allow you to move it. You are dead in the water and if you are lucky to get it back, it could take 3-4 weeks, I would recommend using NameCheap.com or DirectNic.com"

I know you may be thinking well I'm not a spammer but remember if you have affiliates promoting your product and they spam...well guess what you are responsible for them. Protect yourself from the beginning. I wouldn't do any business with GoDaddy at all.

I have posted on this topic a few times and the bottom-line is NEVER go with GoCrappy - opps I mean GoDaddy for anything ever!!!

Hostgator for sure. I found them to allow many more PHP mods in shared hosting.

Also Hostgator is Cpanel based so should you even need move everything migration will be very easy to another Cpanel host. I believe Godaddy is proprietary.

I've tried GoDaddy hosting and hated it. Customer support is terrible. The worst part for me was email delivery. I had an IM WordPress site sending out email confirmations through Aweber and they were frequently delayed as much as an hour. I traced through the servers and the delay is definitely on GoDaddy mail servers. Customer service response to this was normal should be 15 minutes. Even 15 minutes is not good if you're trying to get an email confirmation to send a free download to someone. I've been using Hostgator since and love it (and emails are almost instant).

I've decided I need to move my hosting from GoDaddy, but the Eagle still holds the purse strings, so I'm stuck for a bit. I used to have HostGator for one domain, but never got it set up (I'm basically trying to learn this stuff from the ground up), but I did a search of highly reviewed hosting companies and several were in the top 10 with Host Gator making a few appearances (I checked consumer lists, developer lists and CNet, plus some others) along with FatCow, DreamHost and BlueHost. GoDaddy was nowhere to be found, but the most consistent #1 hosting company was InMotion.

I dunno what's best for me. I need an easy user interface.

  • Neither.

First off, I'd recommend you do not use GoDaddy to host anything.

If this was just a "which shared host" question, I'd say you could get away with HostGator - they're not the best, but they're far from the worst either.

But since you asked it specifically in the Programming Talk forum, and mentioned frequent database requests and yet still on shared hosting, I'd have to say MediaLayer - one of the best performing shared hosts out there.

If you don't truly need it to be shared, then consider managed VPS, or even vanilla VPS - google for options. I also highly recommend asking this question on the WebHostingTalk forums.

Edit: Linode was mentioned as a VPS solution above - I've never used them but I'd consider them based purely on their honesty:

I've been messing with one of my hosts for far too long and I'm finally looking to replace them.

It isn't like I'm new at this, I have 3 hosting accounts and have been doing reseller hosting for awhile. You'd think I should know better by now right?

But lately it seems I've run into far more than my share of problems, and I'm finally ready to get this solved once and for all.

So thanks for the links, I considered going with HostGator VPS but I think I'm going with Linode based on what I've read about them.

In this thread so far, not a single post favours Godaddy hosting - not one !

Not only has GoDaddy hosting has been ruthlessly and mercilessly clobbered here,
but what's even worse, indications show that Name Cheap seems poised to take over as leading domain registrar as well.

GoDaddy needs to buy, study and implement a few WSOs on reputation management.

Personally speaking, I am not sure why GoDaddy is so beloved anymore. There are better solutions out there.

As a domain registrar, I'd say name.com. I've been with them for a while after being with Godaddy for years and trying a few others. I've never looked back.

As for hosting, Hostgator is great in terms of support and reliability. However, if for some reason you do not like Hostgator, I'd probably check out Arvixe. They have been rock solid

I strongly suggest that you (and actually anybody else looking for hosting) consider small VPS, rather then any shared hosting. ALL shared hostings SUCK comapred to VPS. Hosting in Godaddy it's a funny joking

Domain in Godaddy is good and safe???

You've been out in another planet or something???:p

Better you find thread over this forum about godaddy supporting SOPA and shuting down domains, in this case even worse than shuting down your hosting....

Bluehost/hostgator + namecheap I'm doing at the moment, no problems yet.

Like a lot of the other people have said before me, Hostgator is by far the best hosting company and their support service is excellent. I have a friend who hosts his website with GoDaddy and it is slow and very clumbersome, even when he switched to Wordpress (under my suggestion) it is still slow. Add on top of that it took him 5 days to get any reply from their support, well you see where I am heading with this

Just my own opinion but I would suggest Hostgator all the way.
For domains I would recommend Namecheap.

I also advise friends to purchase a domain with godaddy and hosting with hostgator or hostmonster. The reason for this advice is because managing your domain for forwarding is simple with godaddy but their hosting does not offer the same features as hostgator. I can set up a wordpress blog quickly with hostgator versus godaddy hosting.

Now, on the other hand hostgator does not have an affiliate program tied to their domains setup. We all as network marketers like to get paid for referrals. Other than these things there is about a 3 dollar differencr in the 2.

    Hope this helps.

Host gator is better than the EVIL that Godaddy is, but even hostgator is not as good as it was in the past, and it is getting worse, I currently use five different hosts, in four different data centers, lately I have had some issues with hostgator, the problem I think is that average hosting accounts are not much for power or even bandwidth.

Over all, anything is better than the junk garbage, trash, and just downright poor service that godaddy provides, when you think about it, you have to wonder what they are thinking because they have not attempted to change or improve their services for more than three years, using the same inept, incompetent, incomplete service organization, hmmm, now that I think about it, seems like godaddy needs a kick in the ASS.

I thought I wrote your post. Right on. IN total agreement. I came here now because hostgator is having a maintenence issue they claim is only temporary and an hour at the most at a time. I can't get service to my sites for 2 days since returning home. I may have been longer while I was a away. My adsense stopped on the 19th of oct. which coincidentally was the day I left. Others in different states say they cannot reach my sites for days now. Hostgator says there is no problem on their end. I am wondering if my sites were unreachable the whole time I was gone, since my adsense shows no stats since 19th. Go daddy is evil and stupid for flooding the market with ancient tools and services that do nothing for the modern web warrior, but cause wasted time and money. Hostgator has been so superior for so long now....but, what could be going on? I saw others complaining something similar about hostgator on the 25th, of sept.

I have tried Godaddy hosting in the past. I have to agree with a lot of above, Godaddy is slow and has terrible customer support. If you need a simple configuration, they will charge you for it. Most hosting companies do it for free.

I started off using the shared Hostgator plan, and it wasnt up to par. So i went to Hostmonster, and that did ok for a little while, but started slowing down as I have 40 million mysql queries per day.

So then I got a dedicated server at hostgator and all my problems went away! I would never recommend GoDaddy to anyone, one of my coworkers works at godaddy as well, and he doesn't even recommend them!

I would choose hostgator dedicated anyday over anyone else, hostgator is also a company under Bluehost, which is a good company.

I've never heard anything good about GoDaddy hosting. I did use them a bit several years ago and wasn't impressed.

What I generally suggest to people wanting shared hosting is to wait until Dreamhost has one of their deals where you can get the domain and a year of hosting for under $10. I use Dreamhost and they've been pretty good for me so far. Only have had one, maybe two major outages since using them and I'm in year 6 now.

That said, HostGator is supposed to be really good too.

Has anyone had any experience with IX Web Hosting? Their $7.95 unlimited plan seems pretty good and includes 3 free domains and 15 free dedicated IP Addresses!

Do the dedicated IP's really help with SEO? Seems like a generous offer, but for only a little more per month than Host Gator I'm wondering whether its worth it or better to go with Host Gator due to their service and many positive comments I keep seeing?

I currently have sites on both, and between the two I would strongly recommend Hostgator. I'm in the process of moving my sites off of GoDaddy. GoDaddy has been totally unresponsive to my complaints about the speed of my site, Hostgator seems to be much more responsive.

Of course both are low-cost providers, and as your site grows into a real business, you will likely need to move up. Both provide dedicated servers, at the right price - which is a big step forward.

For a site with killer traffic, you are likely to need to look at a higher-end company, like RackSpace or CalPop. Of course, higher end means more $$. Amazon cloud hosting is also a possibility, but again, they are quite expensive when all the costs get added up.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say that GoDaddy is a giant vampire squid sucking the soul from the Internet.

For domains, I use Enom through Hostgator because I've been a reseller on occasion, but I will probably be moving my domains to either Gandi.net or NameCheap. Gandi.net has a no-bull**** guarantee, which is nice.

Never, ever purchase anything from 1&1 Internet. One of the worst companies in the world. Possibly worse than GoDaddy.

For hosting, Hostgator has never let me down.

GoDaddy supported a bill that would have made website owners legally responsible for user-generated content.

Someone posts pirated content, or links to pirated content, on Warrior Forum, or my BuddyPress site, or your blog... And the OWNER is responsible.

With a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

We all know how much the music and film industries love to abuse DMCA laws. This would have compounded the problem, while transferring the punishment for illegal acts from the actor to you or I.

Do you want your business, and your livelihood, to be liable to the actions of your website's users?

No? Then stop voting for it with your wallet.

I've used GoDaddy for domain names in the past and they were ok for it. It was pretty painless and fast which was good as it was my first time doing this. However, the hosting is different. Their hosting isn't very good at all.

The HostGator hosting however is fantastic, and the customer support is always there if you need help. HostGator for me.

No experience with HostGator, but I think GoDaddy are the VistaPrint of the hosting world. Huge operation, expert marketers (expect a lengthy checkout process, and continued badgering post sale) but they are cheap. Wouldn't use them for a UK based site.

I'm biased, because I work at a cloud hosting company, but I would avoid any sort of shared hosting. It's fine for personal blogs, but I would never run my business on a shared server.

The main reason is the fact that you have "neighbors" and shared hosting companies overfill their servers. That means your SEO efforts, performance, load times, and everything are affected by what other sites are doing on your server. Not good if you plan to make a living off your site. I highly suggest Cloud or VPS even when starting out.

It is my experience that newbies tend to have bad experiences with godaddy's service. I have been a godaddy customer for a long time now, at times having relatively high traffic sites. I hardly encounter half of the issues users are complaining about above. When I do encounter a few of these issues, godaddy's customer service has always come to the rescue. Today I use godaddy's virtual dedicated servers and I am very happy with the service.

I am currently moving everything I have with godaddy elsewhere. I was on holiday when my hosting renewal was due and I missed the payment. Three weeks later they deleted everything. The only reason I found out my hosting was gone was the traffic dropping to zero in GA. They insisted they sent 3 emails that I never received. I had to pay 150 dollars for them to restore the files.

For shared I currently use hostgator who I have never had a problem with
For VPS I use mochahost - support is terrible

The best shared I have ever used is fatcow and I only reason I do not use them anymore is that I had too many hosting accounts. Fatcow were fixing code on one of my sites for me. Try getting that type of support from godaddy.

I have used Hostgator and GoDaddy both for a very long time, they both have good and bad things.

    Hostgator
    -Good : Has Cpanel
    -Good: Cost
    -Bad: member admin is difficult
-Bad: Tech support is mostly outsourced to India.

    GoDaddy:
Bad: No Cpanel (they have a custom system that kind of stinks)
Bad: There server setup is strange, there email servers are unreliable
Good: There US based support is better than most.

Neither, Web Hosting, Shared Web Hosting, Virtual Private Server, Dedicated Servers by DreamHost or IT On Demand - Cloud Ready Hosting, Email and Servers they are both having promotions, 50% @ dream and 75% @ turnkey.

Turnkey have a pretty nice SEO plan too, and with the 75% off it goes for nothing for an entire year.
Dreamhost have an awesome control panel with API you can do pretty much anything and to expand into a VPS if your site grows is dead easy on top of that u have no limits (ofc as long as u abide to their TOS etc)

Every page in most dynamic sites makes a number of queries, so this nothing unusual. From my experience, Hostgator is a far better option. Monitoring server tightly is not a bad thing, since that also could result in servers that are not overloaded. All oversellers have some issues related to overloading from time to time, but Hostgator is one of the better option for cheap shared hosting.

    Hi All,

I started another thread discussing about shared hosting recently. I am still seeking solutions.

I imagine that most of the experienced warriors in here would have many sites they need hosting, but do you all buy seperate hosting plans over and over and over again with the ONE HOST?

Isnt that REALLY risky if you build any form of network (you know seo stuff).

I ask this because it appears that hostgator and bluehost only sell single IP host solutions. Sure you can host multiple domains on Hostgator (as I have done to my peril) but if you are trying to make any form of network, and the sites on the same IP all point to the same money sites, then you too will be making a rookie mistake like me.

That is why my questions revolve more around reliable hosts (with good online live help) that are cheap enough to use. It seems the question is then about Shared hosting (like seohost) or buying single domain packages from hostgator.

But when you want to build up your networks and maybe have 20 or so in them, its 20 x (single domain hosting cost + domain name price) which = a lot unless your money site is guaranteed in making a lot more, or google ads defray the cost.

Anyone have experience in how to cheaply run many domains?

Yes, all of your questions above are being answered in your other thread. If you don't want to listen to other people's advice, then stop asking the questions.

EDIT: Not trying to be rude, but the concept of this idiotic "seo hosting" has been thoroughly explained both on this forum & webhostingtalk - but it's not what everyone wants to hear.
