Newbie to databases

Hi all,

My host has said that I need to take a backup of my current database and move it to a new database.

Probably sounds like a dumb question, but how do I do this?

  • Hi Bertie

In addition to backing up your Joomla database you will also need to make a few configuration changes to get your site working on the new server.

A good article on doing this is at How to Move Your Joomla! Site to a New Server | Installation | How-Tos .

As kazakhan mentioned you can use the JoomlaPack component to backup both the database and the files in your Joomla installation.

If I can be of any assistance please let me know.

  • Also it is a really good idea to learn how to backup all of your databases and to try and do that at least once every two weeks. That maybe sounds like a lot of work but once you figure out how to do it its not so hard. Most hosts back all this up and you don't have to worry about ever losing data. But if you really get hit with some bad luck and your host loses all the data, you will want to have a backup of your own. Imagine having a blog with hundreds of posts and tons of comments and losing it all. Not good!

  • The OP didn't mention moving to a new server that I saw but if that IS the case ... if you're using cPanel you might be able to migrate the entire site using cPanel's internal functionality.

Another option to moving your DB only .. phpMyAdmin to export (old), then import (new).

  • Use dump feature of phpmyadmin.

  • Assuming we're talking mySQL databases - I've found SQLyog very useful - and there's an easy transfer between databases function on there too...
