Domain Registration & WebHost Question

Hey Warriors.. I have a simple question to be answered. I am bit curious to know why people usually don't register the domain from where they purchased a web host ? Lets say for instance, most of the people register domains with GoDaddy & have it hosted it by HostGator. What are the benefits of this ? I am wondering..

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Scriptkid.

Usually people are switching hosts more often than domain name registrars. And the host switch process is easier when you don't have to think about the domain name transfer at the same time.

  • There are some domains registrars that are really good at registering domains and some hosting companies that are really good at hosting websites.

This is the main reason people choose different companies and that is why I did it.

I have chosen HostGator for to host my websites and GoDaddy for my domains, but I recently switched to NameCheap

    • Yea, I just made this switch not too long since LOL.
I now use Hostgator solely for my hosting and Namecheap for domains. Would not go with GoDaddy anymore even if they paid me, due to nothing but hassle. Also have a friend who hosts with GoDaddy and he is having nothing but trouble, slow site, slow support, etc.

  • Sometimes hosts give trouble to transfer *your* domain when you are moving to another host. So it will be better not to register your web site with the host.

    • Hosting companies (at least the good ones) are good at hosting. I have heard of people having difficulty transferring domains when they leave a hosting company.

Some registrars are better than others, I personally don't like namecheap

I have used namecheap in the past and they are on my NO NEVER AGAIN list. They are not an ICANN accredited registrar. They are actually a reseller for eNom, so when you do a whois it shows it's registered through eNom.
When you do anything there it has to get passed on to eNom and I experienced delays and failures of their interface with eNom.
When you pay to register a domain there, if somebody registers it elsewhere before they successfully pass the information to eNom, you are out of luck. Except that you get your money back.

  • Imagine this: Small hosting company registers the domain for you, in their name as they often do. They go out of business, and you lose your domain. Best to leave domain registration to the experts.
