If you are talking about an XML site map, there are many scripts and plugins for helping generate site maps. I know of at least a few for both Wordpress and Joomla!

A site map basically provides the search engines with a list of every single URL on your website. This enables them to find pages that they may not normally find.

This helps to find all url that contain your site to Google.
