No it's not a problem it's just more of a preference thing.

As for changing which your site uses it depends what software your using, some like WordPress have the settings in the admin section and other you might need to change the htaccess file.

OK, I just fixed it in the Wordpress admin panel.
I was in fact http://example.com for the WordPress URL and site URL so I changed them both to http://www.example.com

What do I need to do with the .htaccess so Google won't index the duplicate sites?

that will mess up you indexing in Google for a while. I would have left it alone.
Wordpress will take care of the htaccess file

if you have any real organic traffic I would put it back.
If you get 2 or 3 hits a day then don't bother.

A site like deal of day, or retail me not would lose a few thousand visits a day if
    they did that.

Yeah, my site is a brand new blog and I only have the "Hello World!" post on it.
I don't think it will suffer.

It was perfect with the non-www... why do you have to mess with stuff you don't understand?

Anyway, pick one - and stick to it as long as you use the domain. ALWAYS link to it exclusively with the one version you decided to go with.

Finally, the www is an obsolete remnant from the early days of this web thingy - you don't need it.
