Tell me what I need in hosting for WP BuddyPress/Multisite online community

I need advice on a hosting package for my website. I am not looking for a hosting company recommendation. I want to know what kind of package I need.

I am setting up an online community in a career niche using WordPress. I have BuddyPress installed on my main website. When people join they have the option of creating their own blog on a subdomain. When people join they are sent two automatic emails in the activation process. The admin also receives automatic emails. During my testing I discovered that the emails are being blocked because I am on a shared IP. So, I need to make some changes and I also think that I should plan for growth.

This is what I need in hosting:

Dedicated IP
unlimited subdomains for members (members do not have access to cpanel or ftp)

What kind of server should I get and do I need and SSL certificate?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, you will need a dedicated IP address and package that offers unlimited subdomains. Wordpress has a module for multisite use so that you can just point the subdomain to the same WP instance. You only need SSL if you yourself are going to be taking payment submissions.

Thanks Earnie. I already have the multisite options set up. I will have two levels of membership, free and a paid upgrade. I will be using a plugin that integrates with PayPal with payments. What about when people join and input their email addresses? I guess I wouldn't be needing a SSL for that?

Do I need a private server in addition to the dedicated IP?

You don't need SSL certificate to secure email address as you have already bought it to secure sensitive information which also includes email address security.

No need for SSL to secure the email addresses. I'm using shared hosting with a dedicated IP on my host provider.
