I think different programming languages provide different functionalities needed, it is dependent on the requirement , which programming language to use.
For example for interacting with system or in linux we can say kernel , C is the best option.

Many programming languages are there which in todays time have a great importance. Well PHP and C++ are some of mine favorite programming language.

I don't think there is such a thing as "best programming language". What IS there is such a thing as "what developer can create what you need, using the development tools (s)he is using..."

depends on what you are trying to achieve, and to all who mentioned php, php is not programming language, its a scripting language.

C, C++ are very core and once you learn that you can master C# and java because they all are similar to C++

There is no such thing as a best programming language.

A programming language is nothing more than a tool.

Someone might claim PHP is the best language. But if you are writing real-time graphic intensive video games like Diablo 3, you'll quickly find PHP sucks.

The real question is, what are you trying to accomplish, and what are is criteria for success?

There are a lot of characteristics of a language that matter depending on what you are trying to accomplish. In the aforementioned example regarding Diablo 3, the criteria for success is high-frame rates in high resolutions that take advantage of hardware.

For a website like Plenty of Fish, it might be performance and stability (after it supports millions of users).

For a site that gets 1000 users per month, performance is less of an issue.

Finally, a language still can't get all the credit.

Even the best of languages can be destroyed by the programmer that uses them.

In short, there is no best. Only the right one for the right job given your goals.

I personally suggest java... Because nowadays java is "everywhere"... Developed by sun micro system, which is now the top competitor of Microsoft.

Best in speed/memory - C, C++
Best in cross platform - Java
Best for agile development of web applications - PHP, Ruby, Python
Best for MS Desktop applications - C#
Best for Apple - Objective-C
...
Best for everything - Not invented yet

However, the language is not so important. You can learn one's syntax quickly. More important and difficult to learn is the framework.

i prefer Java, now a days most of the sites are on java based.

IMO, there is no "best" programming language but Java is leading right now mostly because it could run on any device.

I believe that it depends on the client's requirements. I like Java but sometimes I code in PHP whenever the requirements is not that "heavy duty"

PHP and ASP.net is the best one actually to do any sort f programming, supports dynamic behaviour of any website and its plateform independency is too good.
Easy to learn and implement with new security features.

I'm a firm believer that there is no "best" programming language.

It's all in what needs to be done and the skill of the person using the language.

I love PHP. I found it easy to pick up and the syntax very understandable even when I was just starting out. JavaScript on the other hand boggles my mind and I just can't seem to pick it up.

Javascript is poised to have a larger role with its Node.js framework which can be used to replace PHP on the server side. It's a far cry from being mainstream, although some notable sites are beginning to using it these days.

You can even use JS to script high end video games with the Unity game engine.

i think C++ and PHP are very easy language .

It really depends what you want to develop if you want to develop web applications then you can go for asp.net or php

Python is much easier............

Whenever I see someone asking for "best programming language" I feel like slapping him. It's like asking "what is the best sport". There is no "best", you have to look at what you want to accomplish first and then see what options you have. Who ever is obsessed with those questions about "best sport, best movie, best video game, best car, best country, best programming language", is either 14 years old or has no life experience.
