HTTPS issue

Hi everyone,

Not sure this is the right forum, but I'm really desperate.

My website functions ok when browsed via HTTP, but when browsed via HTTPS I get a whole different website - a web site that is hosted on the same server (it is not mine, I just checked the ip). How is that even possible?

This is the error I get in IE:

I contacted my web hosting support and they said I should buy SSL in order to control the HTTPS version of my site. What should I do?

  • The obvious. Buy the certificate if you need to use HTTPS. Determining if you need HTTPS is a challenge you need to determine yourself by examination of the functionality. Basically if you offer to accept credit cards or other sensitive information (not passwords or email addresses) then you should use HTTPS, otherwise it is mostly unneeded.

    • Thing is I don't need SSL.
      I wouldn't even bother to go through all this if it didn't screw my rankings in Google (dropped from 3rd spot to page 4, I have 100s of spam pages indexed now). How can another website "take over" the https version of my site? Is this some sort of hacking, or just hosting negligence?

      Am I the only person on earth who experienced this?
      Not even one mention of similar situation in Google (or maybe I should improve my googling skills).
  • Did you tell your host that it is showing the other site instead of yours or did tell them about the certificate issue?
    You might want to tell them about the first problem and not mention the second.

      No matter what you guys do, do not sign up with webhostingworld.net.
  • The best solution for you is to get https turned OFF for your domain.

    You already said that you dont need the https, so tell webhostingworld to turn off the SSL, once the https protocol is shut off, google should correctly link the pages with the http protocol in their index.
