How Would I Make a website Like This?

Hey everyone.

Looking to start a new business, and have some great ideas and a great UI built around the website builder market. My issue is that I have little experience in Web Development, and am not sure what language these websites function would be written in.

The websites I am talking about are the Free Website Builder types, such as
Weebly.com
Webs.com
Wix.com
etc.

Now, I don't want to hear why I will not be able to compete. I have overtaken strong competitors before, and can do it again.

Anyhow here are my questions:

1) What language is the building function of these websites written in?
2) How would this function be integrated into the webpage?
3) What should I use for a database for users to sign up and store their website designs?
By this I do not mean their permanent sites, I mean their drafts, etc.
4) How should I outsource this if necessary?
5) How many hours would something like this take to make? I would assume 1500 - 2000 based on past conversations with developers.

Thanks so much,
Dylan

I’m not sure if I understand you correctly... You wish to create your own drag and drop website builder? Well thats what ill go with when I am answering these questions
    1) I have not had much exeperiance with these platforms so take this one with a grain of salt. I believe it is coded in multiple languages with a frontend of PHP and backends and processors that include ruby, python and perl
    2) You would create a large database of functions containing all of the possible "things" somebody could do with a element. And then you would take the placement of this element check the database and generate the code accordignly
    3) MYSQL is the standard when it comes to database so I would have to reccomend that for maximum compatability
    4) I definitly think this would be an impossible project to do on your own, even if ou are an experianced PHP or Ruby coder you need people with multiple skill sets
    5) This is a very large project. If you plan to code it by yourself it would take... forever. But if you really believe in this and plan to hire a group of dedicated staff I would say you could probably have this running in beta in 6-12 months

    Yeah, the above and...

It's probably best that you write out as complete a spec as possible.

In fact, write out as much of the logic as you can - create the core classes and interfaces for other classes.

Do your database design, get mock ups of all the pages.

Then you can outsource the more routine tasks - member registration etc. and then focus on coding the most crucial bits yourself if that's what you want.

  • If you have little experience with web programming and need to create the site right away. The best solution is using CMS like wordpress or Joomla. Plenty of plugins and templates are available for them to do your job well.

If you are looking to have a site where folks can have their own website from a template or model, why not look at using the Multi-Site functionality of WordPress? You can offer your customers several options as to look and feel but you control which plugins to use and you keep everything updated across the platform.

That is a big issue. You will need to learn or hire someone who has experience in developing sites already. The easiest to start will be as ChristineCobb suggested.

You guys are REALLY going to recommend using something like Wordpress or Joomla?? How is that going to help the situation of making a free website builder? It seems to me that's only going to make things harder. You aren't going to make a competing product with the listed sites if you start with Wordpress. Joomla would be even worse.

Do yourself a favor, and hire yourself an application designer. Doing the spec by yourself is not going to work. Believe me when I say, you need someone to create a logical consistency, make the parts all fit together. This is then made into a wireframe, which is in turn given to a designer to make a mockup. Your application developer(s) will then take the spec, wireframe, and mockups and build the application. This is how things work in the real world. Complex projects require multiple talented people.

It seems you like websites starting with "w"

Apart from that, most websites are written in PHP, but they also have a very high design standard.
If you are completely new to web development, don't expect anything before christmas. If you want a developer to create you a unique website with designs like that, you're talking $3000-$5000 if you're lucky.

If anyone tells you they can get what you need done for $3000-$5000, hire someone else.

To further illustrate my last point, you could have a $100,000 budget, and if I were the developer, I would not run out of things to do. If you gave me $100,000 tomorrow, I would not do it though, because you don't have the team and I have other things to do. I'm not saying your budget should be 100 K, but it would not be difficult to design a product for that much money. You would have an awesome product too!

If I were you, I would start with a budget of about $20,000. I assume that's not a problem?

Well, I'm from Romania. Here a medium salary for a programmer is about $400-$800. I repeat, medium, not the highest. Anyway, I just quit my job and the last salary I had (after promotion) was about $500. For $3000, I would be able to work 8hr/day 5 days/week, for 5-6 months.

So, with the right person, you could do about anything with (almost) any budget. HR research is very important before starting a project.

On-topic: Blinking, if you want to start a project like this, contact me and let's see what we can do.

If you could really get a job like this done for this amount, God bless you. But if you really knew what your services were worth and had confidence in your abilities, you would charge more, even though you are from Romania. For many people in the world, it would be a huge risk to hire you to do something like this.

$3000 would get you barely over a week with me. But I'm not for hire.

I all the time recommend wordpress for any website development if it is a normal based website but as I have seen your requirement and ideas I think you need to develop it from scratch and you need continues developers to develop your website and maintain it.

And I see you have very little knowledge of developing the website than I recommend you go for developers or you can contact me with the full concept and ideas and I can give you quote and see whether it is in your budget or not..

    I hope this helps..
