Run 50% of Application on Central Server?

Hi,

I'm interested in having an application developed to sell to individuals - however, I'm concerned about licensing and unauthorised use of the software. I saw somewhere a mention of running 50% of the application online - and given the nature of the software, active users will always be online. Or maybe even 100% online?

The program is pretty simple, just looking data from 1400 lines of excel, 8 cells wide.

I'm no programmer, but I'm just wondering if I would need my own server to run the application or if I could run it initially from a shared hosting account?

Many thanks in advance,

Ted

Why not just host the whole thing online, and sell memberships? It seems to me this would be less complicated.

As far as the shared host thing, I doubt that would work if you really did split your application in two. In that case, you probably need more control over the server than a shared host would allow. If you hosted the whole thing online it would probably be fine, however.

before building an application... have you checked to see if people will pay you money for your product?

If there is a market for your product, then develop the membership site. You will save a lot of money compared to developing and then marketing

You might be able to work something out like that using Azure for example. It sounds like you are basically talking the traditional client/server style.

yes, web application would be good & easy to update.

you could either charge for a monthly memberships and/or for Pay-as-you-go model.

I am assuming that you've got some nice formulas in that excel .. with multiple sheets.

You'll need somebody to transfer the logic from the excel into a web app.

If you know that it's going to be big you could hire somebody to do it in Java or Python and set it up with Google App Engine
