Help Please!

I recently registered four new domains that I plan to build wordpress sites on. Last night I added the domains to my hosting, and installed Wordpress onto the sites from my c-panel using fantastico. The first, second and fourth one went off without a hitch. The third one: something went wrong and I can't figure out how, why, or what to do about it. Look at the link below (I hope it posts as a link, it is only my login link, nothing else.) The login page does not come up. All of the other sites did what they were supposed to, but this one, well can anyone tell me what happened and what to do?

Also, if you look below, this is what shows up in mysql databases. Obviously, the 4th one here (which is the one in question) is not the same size as the others. (The first one is my original site.) I have deleted the database and the wp installation and reinstalled it TWICE. It still does the same thing. Can somebody please tell me what to do to fix this? (Please, if you can also use as non-technical language as possible, I am just an old gal who struggles with the techie stuff.)

    It looks like the style sheets are not being loaded, I'd blame the theme but since this is a new WP installation that isn't likely the problem. Probably just a corrupt installation, it happens sometimes.

    Have you tried removing the installation and starting again? You should be able to remove it using Fantastico, otherwise you can use your FTP client to log in and delete the files yourself (try the Fantastico method first though).

    You could reinstall it with Fantastico or do the installation manually, it's pretty simple but you will need to create the MySQL database yourself - as you were able to provide the DB sizes it looks like you're comfortable working with MySQL. The WordPress website has instructions for doing a manual installation, again it's not too hard to accomplish.

      Yes, I have removed and reinstalled a couple of times using Fantastico. I guess I am going to have to try the manual installation. I am not totally comfortable with that. The only reason I was able to provide the DB sizes is because they were listed right there in the "MySql" section in my c-panel.

      I do have the written instructions on how to do the manual install, so I should be able to figure it out. I was just trying to avoid having to do that. I haven't really done much yet with ftp, I have only used wordpress and have just done everything I had to do either from the wp dashboard, or the c-panel files manager.

      It looks like I am going to have to get my hands dirty. Oh, well, I guess it had to happen sometime.

    Once you get the hang of the FTP process you'll find that it's not too hard. Not sure what you are using for a client, I use WIN SCP on my Windows machine - it's a free FTP client that also does secure FTP which some hosts (i.e. Hostgator) use instead of FTP.

    The hardest thing you'll probably encounter at the beginning is finding the actual file path to your domains root (or to the folder off the root if you're not installing directly at the root). On most LINUX hosts you'll find the root in the "public_html" folder, some have also mapped a shortcut typically labeled "www" that points to the same location..

    As for MySQL you may have a link in you Cpanel to PHP MyAdmin or an equivalent admin utility. You can use this to create a database, make sure you note the following information about your database:

    -Database Name
    -User Name
    -User Password
    -Database Host Name ( on many systems this is "localhost")

    WordPress will prompt you for this information when you start the installation. The balance of the installation is very simple.

      I think I figured out why the wp installation is not working (maybe.) I just don't know why it's happening or what to do about it. I removed the wp installation from my other domain, and compared what I got when I typed the url of both into a browser. If you could look at these two:

      and

      Compate the .ftpquota file on both. The first one shows a number there when you click on it, the second shows a "Forbidden" with an error message. I have looked at all of my other sites, and this one is the only one with that message on the .ftpquota

      I think that is probably causing my problem? How can I fix that?

    ".ftppquota" is a file used to setup a "virtual quota", it's a method that some web hosts use to limit what their users can upload. I found an explaination on the web that clarifies it's use:

    Virtual quotas are implemented in Pure-FTPd as simple files called
".ftpquota", located in the home directory of chrooted users. This file only
contains two numbers: the current number of files for this user and the
total size of the directory (+ its subdirectories), in bytes. When a new
file is uploaded, these numbers grow. When a file is deleted, these numbers
get smaller.
    This was for a product called Pure-FTPd which runs on Apache web servers.

    The fact that anyone can read this file is strange, the permission should be set to prevent outside access as it is on your other sites. It almost suggests that your WP problem may be due to security settings, however this is usually a problem when files don't have enough permission - you seem to have the exact opposite case and that shouldn't cause WP to fail.

    Is there anything different about this domain or its hosting that you can think of that may account for the file permissions to be different? Was there a previous installation of WordPress or Joomla on this site?

    One other thought - did you contact your hosting company? If they are supplying Fantastico they may be able to help. If all else fails please let me know, I can probably take a look at it for you.

    • I will contact hostgator and see if they can help. The one with the Forbidden message is the one I am having problems with. All of my other domains show the numbers when I click on that file.

      These are all brand-new domains. I registered them at the same time, added them to hostgator at the same time, installed wordpress at the same time. For some reason that one wouldn't install correctly, and I have removed it and reinstalled it a couple of times. I will let you know what hostgator says.

  • You're in good hands with Hostgator, I use them as well and have always found their support to be first quality. Their online chat is very useful - I've solved all of my tech issues that way and they are around 24 x 7 (which is very helpful when you live out here).

  • Well, Bill, you were certainly right about Hostgator. A couple of emails back and forth today and here is the result:

    "Your domain was hitting a mod_security rule where any domain that has 'rites.com' in it would be blocked. I've removed this and installed wordpress for you.Please check and if you see any further issues let us know.

    It is all under control now. For anyone who might have a problem similar to this in future, look at your domain name. My domain teresawrites contained within it "rites" which caused a security block. I would have never figured that one out in a million years!
