Hi guys I want to learn programming. I am a complete newbie and do not know anything about programming. Can you recommend any websites or books for me please.

    • When I thought about programming language, I always remind PHP because PHP is a very simple language to develop a website with higher functionality compare to any other language. Its an opensource language so its very good to develop a cost efficient website with help of CMS like Magneto, Wordpress, Drupal and Joomla.

    • Couldn't agree more. I remember when I decided to become a programmer (just before the internet boom :rolleyes - immerse yourself in the programmer's environment - best way is to decide on what language path you want to start in, and dive in to the tutorials.

      Get some quick wins under your belt - actually build some things - definitely don't just do theory first - I would recommend you become a pragmatic programmer. This way you'll be able to keep up with the continual changing of frameworks, languages, etc..

      I'm biased, but I think the most organised and flexible languages/frameworks to learn is ASP.NET C#. If you focus on MVC3 you will get good experience in HTML and jQuery as well - then taking on most other languages like PHP and ruby will be much easier to pickup quickly.
  • Well, Learning programming language is not difficult as it seems. Select the book for programming language and then it read and practice regularly from it. Start Programming the Mac Using Objective-C is also good book.

      And it's a good resource for me when i forget HTML, CSS attributes. Good place to learn HTML, CSS, imo those are the 2 languages you should learn first even though they are not "programming languages". Youtube is also good for that.

      If you already know HTML and CSS and are looking to move on to web based languages like PHP and Javascript, AJAX etc. then w3schools is great.

      If you want to move on to Operating System languages like C, C++, Java, C#, D, J# etc. then I suggest buy a good (current) book. $60-$100. For each language you want to learn.

    If you are complete newbie i sugggest you start off with C so that u can learn basics of the programming and its a best way to start learning a programming language. I would recommend C for dummies book as it allows you to practice of what might be an expected output and detailed descriptions for beginners
  • C++ is not commonly used for creating websites. (It can be used to write CGI programs, but that's a rather specific subset of the things you'd need to do on a website). The best way for learning programming languages is w3schools.com
  • If you want to become a programmer then it will take a lot of time and effort. First of all try to decide what you want to program, For example website apps or maybe iPhone apps.

    Then see which language suites what you want to do the best.

    My advice is to learn Python, its an easy to learn and powerful object oriented programming language. However first try learning about the proccess of programming this will make the rest of the learning proccess make a bit more sense.

  • I suggest that you pick a small project, and learn as you go. This is by far the best way to learn. Sure, you will definitely encounter obstacles, but you'll find that the most learning you'll get is when you make mistakes and have to figure it out. Also, google and stackoverflow.com will become your best friends in no time!

  • You told , you just want to learn programming but, you didn't specify which programming language you want to learn. I think you should select a language first. then you should ask us , how to learn it. So I think you got it and will go ahead with your great responsibility.

  • I agree with the suggestion to start with HTML. It has less complexity than the "active" languages. If you find that HTML is within your grasp, you are ready to tackle another. Probably, PHP is the one to learn next.

    • From my experience - and I know Basic, HTML, Assembler, RPG, Cobol, Visual Basic, PHP, SQL, and more - I would go for learning how to program Arduino.

      Those things measure and control REAL things, and I see a big future for them and the people who know how to program them.

      Anybody around here who has used them?

  • I suggest you decide first what programming language you want to learn as there are lots of them with different styles of coding. And find an editor for it as well. I'd suggest for your first time coding, use the one without auto complete features. There's nothing like hard coding to really learn and understand how the language works.

    w3schools as said above has tutorials on the basics of many programming language. Maybe you can browse the site, try out the programming languages and see what you like.

  • If you want to learn web programming, start with HTML and head over to w3schools [dot] com. If you want to learn computer programming, i'd recommend heading to your local library and getting a book on Python.
  • I personally prefer CodeCademy - I've been taking a course there recently to learn jQuery (it's just one of those languages I never got around to learning). It is extremely easy and intuitive to learn languages on the site, and is far better than W3Schools.

    IMO, W3Schools should be avoided at all costs - it only will teach you to be sloppy.

    Can I ask you why do you want it? My first guess is - you want to make money, because developers are paid well.

    There are always some hot\new technologies and languages that need new developers and that is a good place to begin.

    But it all starts with why
  • The best approach would be to learn HTML and purchase Dream Weaver. Why? Because there is a symbiotic relationship between writing some code and then deploying it i.e. you immediately get to see the fruits of your labor. The same cannot be said of many other software languages without really having an understanding of what the error messages mean.
    Once you're comfortable writing code and feel that this is a viable route to take, sign up for a training class with a quality institution, be it a college or a training company, and you're on your way.

    • With all-due respect, I'd like to know why Dreamweaver has to be mentioned. It is, for all it's worth, a disgrace to the web design world. Creating SEO havoc, messy code, and a terrible lack for actual coding skills, Dreamweaver is by far the worst editor for HTML there is. Nothing compares to the good ol' Notepad++ editing (or, if you really are feeling adventurous, Notepad). It allows you to actually take joy in your coding and feel like you've accomplished something. Most of the time, WYSIWYG editors like DreamWeaver aren't really WYSIWYG across the board.

  • My general advice is that WYSIWYG HTML editing is a BAD idea, ESPECIALLY if you don't know HTML, because if you don't know what's going on under the hood it can get out of hand really quickly.

  • Lots of professionals use Dreamweaver in "code view". It actually does a pretty good job, though it has a limited number of languages it can deal with. It's not what I would think of as a "programmers editor", though it handles PHP, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS very well. It also handles ASP classic, and is one of the only Coldfusion editors (yuck). Personally, I need a lot more than just the first four, and have no need for the latter two, so it won't work for me. If you're starting out, it's fine, though I don't recommend the WYSIWYG mode for anything other than cursory examination of your pages.

    If you are serious about programming and want to get a solid base and understanding of fundamentals, look at codeacademy.com. It's interactive, tracks your progress, and also free. Best of all, it's maintained by a team of programmers so the lessons are practical and applicable to real world scenarios.

    • It is not only about learning to program. Once you have done that you want to land your first job. That is the hardest part. If you have nothing to show most people would not believe that you can deliver good work and give the job to somebody else.

      One way to get over that hurdle might be to write some software for a person or a company you know, for free. That might open other doors.

    • I suggest you first decide what kind of project you want to develop.
      It will lead you directly to which programming language or languages you might need to learn.

      Example.
      If you want to write WP plugins, you should start by learning just some basics on HTML, and then learn PHP quite well.
      Depending of the nature of your project and as complexity increases, you should learn some more, like jQuery and java.

      I personally started learning online. It's plenty of good tutorials available online that made it so easy for beginners.

      Just Google "visual tutorial" + PHP

      Do find a tutorial you like, follow it -not simple read it, but do it yourself.
      It's not hard at all.

  • start with C, this will give you basics to move to object oriented languages like C#, Java, PHP, etc.
  • PS. the tutorials on SUN errr Oracles website are fantastic for learning java... But it is one of the ugliest languages ever invented.

    It was originally created for washing machines and microwaves and since then has become so much worse.

    Seriously though, trying to program any sort of GUI in Java is painful to get it to bend the way you want. Especially when you compare it to something like QT by Nokia, a free library extension for C++. QT is a breeze and works on almost every mobile phone, Windows, Mac, Linux and every flavor of OS in between.

  • Well, I think it depends on what kind of programming you are referring to. If you want to learn PHP then I strongly suggest you begin at PHP Tutorial or checkout the tuts at Web development tutorials, from beginner to advanced | Nettuts+

    If you want to learn how to code to make wordpress plugins then learning PHP will be a great help, but you will also need to learn the ins and outs of the WordPress API functions too. Net Tuts has a few good tutorials on plugin development.

    • The mistake most beginners make is that they tend to read. To learn to program, you need to do it - just follow examples and try to run the code to see the output. Programming can not be learnt by reading it live a novel.

  • Ok..... Your intention is good..... but you need to start up with core level programming techniques. You need the basic and root level maturity. Now a days people are more depending on built in package features. Joomla, Wordpress made people lazy as almost all features are given just to use with a click.
  • There are so many references and online tutorials available in the internet and you'll get them in a minute searching. For books I can suggest you Schaum series- for any language, data structure or algorithms and this book is lot easier for you.

    if want to learn PHP you should begin from php.net and read PHP manual (find CHM version to read easily)
