DreamWeaver Or Photoshop?

I was talking to this guy who has a successful programming business and he only uses photoshop for designing his websites.

What do you do? I personally use dreamweaver but there really is a lot more to that program that I will ever use, so I am thinkin' I may try something else.

Any thoughts?

Oops... By the way I am talking from a programming standpoint. Code is code, so if it is being setup in dreamweaver is it easier to work with than photoshop?
#programming #dreamweaver #photoshop
  • I've been using Dreamweaver and Fireworks.

    Dreamweaver is a html/css editor

    Photoshop is for photo editing

    These are two different softwares

    • photoshop and dreamweaver used for diff purposed.
    • That is absolutely true!
So web designer needs both for designing websites.
    • I Am Agree With you
  • Hi drewanderson...

I use both Photoshop CS4 Extended and Dreamweaver CS4 to design my sites and the sites of my clients.

The cool thing about using PS is that you can design the site, slice the PS image using the Slice tool, and then save it as a HTML file using File-->Save For Web and Devices.

PS will create an image folder and the HTML file. This is cool because for those individuals that like to "view source" to "steal" layouts, they won't be able to because most of the HTML coding will be image files that was created in Photoshop.

However, I use Dreamweaver CS4 in case I need to hyperlink a part of the image, put in an "opt in" box, etc.

I also use Dreamweaver for designing sites that have long salesletters. I haven't found out how to do a salesletter site in PS, but I will, if it can be done.

I can design sites...but I need a good copywriter to write the salesletter. I am not great at writing killer salesletters. I'm OK, but not great like some warriors on here.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hey Drew,

I've been building web applications for going on 12 years now. Dreamweaver has been top of my list for many of those years as it has a great WYSIWYG interface which makes laying out websites real easy (although I prefer working in code mode myself.)

For more complex line of business application I use Microsoft Visual Studio, ASP.NET and C# as creating complex business applications needs a good object orientated approach to design.

These days however, with the phenomenal growth of open source blog and CMS platforms, I create all my niche market and money sites using either Drupal or the Wordpress platform. They are both extremely well optimized for SEO, don'r require and coding, have massive template / theme libraries and a huge number of additional modules you can plug in which enables me to setup a niche site in under an hour.

Photoshop is by far the best graphics tool for photo editing logo creation etc, but it's expensive, a good free alternative is Paint.NET or Gimp.org

    Cheers
    Nick
    • [ 2 ] Thanks
    • [1] reply
    • Thank you for telling us about Paint.NET and Gimp.org. I will try them as I can't afford Photoshop right now. Are these 2 as hard to learn as Photoshop?

BTW, how do I post a "thank" to a post?

      DinhTa

  • I think the reason he said that, is that the design step can only be handled by an editor capable of making the type of graphics that Photoshop is capable of. To most professionals Dreamweaver is a tool, but not really a design tool.

I've moved away from using Dreamweaver, but the same is true of me: most of the designs I am involved in start in Photoshop, then I code them to make a final product.

The idea that Dreamweaver is a "one stop shop" for all your web design needs, is completely baseless.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • [2] replies
    • Yeah I agree. I have noticed that they include a hellacious amount of tools that would take an incredible amount of time to learn all of them and even then there is no reason you would ever need to use them all.

I have designed blueprints on a program called AutoCAD AutoDesk that is similar to DreamWeaver in it's complexity and they include so much that it would almost make more sense to break the product up and let people choose what features they need so that the cost is lowered and they can tweak the parts that people really use a lot.

Thanks for all the feedback friends. Much appreciated.
      • [1] reply
    • I agree. I stopped using DW years ago.

I use Photoshop and Fireworks for the design. Then I code up the HTML/CSS from scratch in Komodo. And the only thing Komodo does for me is tag folding and highlighting. Works for me, though... I like clean, cross-browser XHTML/CSS.

      ... but that's just me.

  • P.S. I would have to say that the Snagit software is such an easy and wonderful tool to have in your arsenal if you don't already have it. It helps with anything and everything from what I have experienced. Any thoughts on that? Plus, it works easily with both Dreamweaver and Photoshop.
    • [1] reply
    • I do like Snagit.. Been using DW and Photoshop for many years now, but if I want to grab an image really quickly and throw it on a site, I just use Snagit. It was created by the same folks who created Camtasia I believe. I got the bundle for like $324 (both snagit and camtasia studio) Love their products.
  • i always use photoshop for designing the "aesthetics" of my site - but the coding/development i normally use either notepad and/or dreamweaver around a Joomla core

building a site purely from images will be detrimental to any onsite optimization you intended to implement...

i cant see how that guy with a successful web business would be able to manage doing websites just with photoshop? Doesn't add up... he would at the very least need to have some kind of code editor if not at least notepad... photoshop is not a an efficient way to do web development as far as i am concerned...
  • PS - For designing
    Dreamweaver - For coding
  • I agree you need to learn both one will compliment the other, but i wouldn't go down the route of trying to set up websites directly from slicing graphics in photoshop, the results arent very good and the site will take a long time to load.
  • you can use photoshop also for designing but in dreamweaver making templates & giving effects are more convienient. I personally prefer Dreamweaver.
  • "90 Second Website Builder" is great - not an html editor, but does a lot of the same things photoshop and dreamweaver do by click and drag. It's great for building sites quickly.
P.S. I'm not an affiliate, I really do just like and recommend it!

    • This post is complete crap... Photoshop does not do everything dreamweaver can do, so what are you specifically talking about? We aren't talking about editing party photos to post on facebook... We are talking about building web pages.

If you are new to this post please scroll up and read the first few. If you just post a one liner response that makes our I.Q.'s lower, then say it out loud to yourself and don't post anything

It would be cool to hear from people that have actual specific examples. There have been some great posts already, but a lot of junk too.

      Let's keep it smart. thanks
  • Yeah in my opinion the two programs work hand in hand with one and another, I use both.
  • For me I use Dreamweaver.
  • I use photoshop for editing photos and I sometimes use Dreamweaver for advanced webpage editing. I personally didn't even know that you could use photoshop to design webpages.
  • Both of them are somethign different photoshop is an image editing software. Dreamweaver is an script editor.
  • I use a combination of both..couldn't imagine a whole site in IMages would think it would load VERY slow and is outdated when you could use CSS to place them..
  • FireWorks for designs
    Visual Studio for Asp.Net scripting
    Zend Studio for PHP scripting
  • I have used both as well. I prefer Dreamweaver to most other programs for simple editing of HTML. I have only used photoshop for picture editing. I have seen good headers done in photoshop. Those were impressive.
  • I use both Dreamweaver and Photoshop for my sites and for those of my clients. For my affiliate marketing sites, I'm also using XSitePro which is a great program for people who have little or no knowledge of html. I can create a site with XSitePro in a fraction of the times it takes in Dreamweaver.

PM me if you want more info on this.
  • I totally think DW is easier. I have been using it for years and I tried to do a site with PS but just couldn't get my head wrapped around it.

I don't hand write my code, at least not all of it. I use the WYSIWYG part of DW and go into code view to do specific work. I could do it all by hand but just don't see the point.

Using photoshop to design websites?? thats news to me i though it was used to design and edit the images and those images, banners and logos will be used by dreamweaver to create the website.
  • i use macromedia homesite ++ for coding and macromedia firework for designing . but firework and photoshop not good thing to use maquee tools. i use corel is better .
  • Using photoshop to create the code for your website is not the best option. Chances are it will be image heavy and have significant impact on site speed and loading. Dreamweaver is a far more efficient option.
    • [1] reply
    • Okay...I have to reply....

I have been developing sites, now for over 15 years and I still have an original copy of dreamweaver and photoshop on my old 486...

Photoshop is fantastic for prototypes, if anyone wants my layered files that I use, I will toss them to you.

I am only speaking for myself, but when I create a site from scratch, it's great to keep myself in line from the get go with my "acceptable with and height" frame....from there I go nuts and then just cut and code after the client signs off on the prototype...

A bit old school, I realize, but fireworks and the like with the naming convention has never been a great help...

Download the free trial for both, but just be careful to use the tools as they were meant to be used.

  • I always use photoshop and frontpage to make my website.
After i design my work at photoshop, slice it, save it. Then i go to frontpage to edit the website
  • If you are looking for earning money with your wesites and look for ready mades choose Xsite Pro or Artisteer. I have both used Dreamweaver and Photoshop and I was sitting endless with these apps. Just my 2 cents.

  • I use Dreamweaver for coding and Gimp for Image/Banner design. Also, use Snagit for screen captures.
  • I still use the Dreamweaver 8. Still does what I want.
  • I personally use Photoshop cs3 extended for the graphic design for my website, then use Dreamweaver to build the site. As has been stated, they are two totally distinct tools. I personally have never designed an entire website in PS. Don't even know how feasible it would be as opposed to using two different tools specifically designed for two distinct purposes.

    Convergence
    • [1] reply
    • I use them both. They are very good tools to work with.
  • Lots of comparisons of dreamweaver to photoshop however they are two diferent kinds of programs. You create images in one and you create code in (html, css , php etc) in the other.

Long and short to the OP - your friend wasn't being accurate. I bet he does use something to code with even if its notepad. Yes Photoshop can put out code but youare going to end up with some text as an image which is inefficient and horrible for SEO.
  • I favor Dreamweaver to almost other programs for elementary editing of HTML. I have only used photoshop for picture editing. I have checked good headers done in photoshop.
  • I have used both software packages and both are great for different sets of tasks.

Sure you can design sites in both Dreamweaver and Photoshop. But you get more power out of either one depending on what you want user to be able to do.

Are you a designer? Or you need to have everything perfect or in the exact place? I would go with photoshop. With photoshop you can design the layout just how you like it. You can then turn the photoshop into a website by either handing it to your fellow website developer or slicing and dicing the template up to be used on the site.

Do you like tweaking the code on your page? Do you like to have forms popup on the page? Then I would use dreamweaver. Dreamweaver has some great server side tools that would allow anyone to build a (ecommerce) website (from scratch!) in no time at all. Well maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it does give you the ability to do it from within the software without any previous programming experience. Photoshop doesn't give you that.

I would recommend figuring out what you're going to use the software for. If you like to edit photos, go with photoshop, if you like tweaking websites, go with dreamweaver. (of course there are other tools out there than just these 2)
  • Photoshop can create pretty decent websites but if you want to do anything more advanced than static pages with no dynamic effects you really need something like Dreamweaver.

      These are 2 different items.
Photoshop is for graphics and photo editing.
Dreamweaver is for coding and web development.
    • Photoshop for graphics

      Notepad++ for coding

    • You are pointing to different surroundings. Photoshop is a photograph enhancing application where you can edit, retouch and make logo for sites while Dreamweaver is a programming surroundings.
  • Photoshop is an image editor (a pretty advanced one, so just calling it an "image editor" would be inappropriate, but will do for now). Dreamweaver, on the other hand, is a code editor.

Photoshop is where you design the layout of your website. Dreamweaver is where you code the layout of your website (and also code the server side stuff, but I'll leave that out for now). Two different things.

You can design a website with Photoshop, and code it using any programming text editor, not just Dreamweaver. Many people create and slice images in Photoshop, and hand code it in a text editor. Same goes for programming.

    Regards,
    Revolves
    • [1] reply
    • This is my understanding of using the two together. For anything more than a basic design, you usually don't just sit down and write code with no idea of what the finished site will look like. That's where Photoshop comes in. Design and layout in PS and then code in Dreamweaver (or other text editor).

Professional designers don't use the HTML that Photoshop produces but it is a good tool to create a visual reference when you start writing code.
      • [1] reply
  • Adobe photoshop is just to edit your own photos.
Macromedia Dreamweaver is to create websites.
  • Dreamweaver and Photo shop Both are important for designing a website.

  • I have always been a code purist and never use WYSIWYG solutions. There is nothing wrong with Dreamweaver but it isn't my bag.

My environment is Coda for html/css/php/javascript - great tool and highly recommended. For designing I use photoshop.
  • Guys make your lives easier. Design your site using Photoshop, slice up the sections such as header, sidebar etc., and place those images into a template in Xsite pro. Any novice with a little bit of Photoshop know how can build a site in one hour. Forget all of that code stuff. Crank and make money. Its all about speed these days.
  • hello Drew,

I also always use Photoshop to design website
only make an appearance and cut it in photoshop
I only then input into the Dw for the code
  • I have dreamweaver at my home and i want to make a website and i have heard its best to use fireworks with dreamweaver, although i have made my previous websites perfectly fine.
  • Yeah because these software is completing each other when you are building a website
-Dreamweaver to write your website html, css, javascript
-Photoshop to design your website graphic
  • i prefer using not only one software, i use combinations for better output..dreamweaver, adobe photoshop, wordpress are those i use to make good website
  • Photoshop and dreamweaver goes hand by hand. You canot use only one of them. Sometimes I prefer to combine Illustrator with them. It gives me many web design ideas.
  • I use Photoshop for the graphics, and build the HTML and CSS by hand using Geany - but you only need a text editor. Notepad is fine, Notepad++ is better.

I also use Geany for building WordPress templates, but I've used Aptana in the past and liked it.
  • Photoshop is for design, Dreamweaver is for HTML/CSS coding ... don't do design in Dreamweaver and don't do HTML/CSS in Photoshop.
  • PS for designing and Dreamweaver is for coding of your design. The two software is very important when you are try to design a websites.
  • Dreamweaver is an HTML layout program and Photoshop is the industry standard graphic image editor. both have there own advantages but I personally prefer Dreamweaver as I feel easy to work with it.

  • Dreamweaver is a website editor, so this would be the best programme to create a web page, meanwhile Photoshop is an image manipulation programme.
  • This is the largest thread containing the most posts purely to get post count up I have ever seen on the WF.

Yes, you can JUST use photoshop to create webpages WITHOUT any other software. Code is total crap but if all you want is a visually oriented website with some links to content that wont get in SE's it will work.

I have never met a programmer that can draw or has much in the way of creative right brain processing which is vital to being able to create appealing visual presentations or graphics. So from that stand point I would NOT recommend photoshop for your programmer friend.
  • hmm, you can use photoshop for designing the website or button or etc and slice them to make an HTML in DW.
But, I'm more comfort to using Fireworks and notepad++
  • hi,
as you have already mentioned that you are talking from a programmer's point of view you will need to use dreamweaver as it will help you to code xhtml, css, php and other programming languages related to the web.
on the other hand photoshop is a software which will help you to create nice pictures, images that you will be using in your website.

Photoshop is used for creating the GRAPHICS for a site, creating the graphical mock-up. PS does not do HTML and you should not use that which ImageReady spits out.

Dreamweaver is a tool for web page creation - that means the html and css for a site. If you don't know HTML now and cannot create a page with notepad, then Dreamweaver isn't going to help you build a good site. Learn HTML from the ground up first, then learn CSS to go with it.

Fireworks is better for slicing if you have it - you can load your psd into fireworks.

    My design flow:
Wireframe in fireworks (because it has precise measurements and easy resizing

  • Photoshop? you must be kidding me. this is a terrible way to create websites, assuming there is an option to "export to html"
  • I use PS to create graphics, and people use DW to code the site.
  • Hiii
Photoshop and Dreamweaver are two different kind of software.....

    Thanks
  • I use it all, its a means to an end. I use photoshop to create a comp for the website at hand. I use dreamweaver to program the website itself. I use illustrator to draw vector images so I can incorporate into the design. Unless somebody wants something movie like, jquery scripts do enough of the work to get the website animated enough [like slides].

If you want to get into flash, I recommend you also learn html 5 because that is the direction the internet is moving towards too. Adobe offers a free beta of a program called Muse specifically for html 5.
  • Let's keep this thread alive forever.
  • there is big difference between dw and ps.
  • Photoshop if you choose to do graphic design if you want i can get you a copy for $300

    • I use photo shop for editing pics and I sometimes use Dream weaver for advanced web page editing. I personally didn't even know that you could use photo shop to design web pages.
  • Dreamweaver is one scripting web design tool when photoshop is one simple graphics design tool,
In dreamweaver you can write javascript and vbscript when in photoshop you can not be written javascript and vbscript,
Dreamweaver is supporting different kind of language syntax when photoshop is not supporting any one kind of language syntax.
  • How can he used photoshop !!!

    Anyway i use dreamwave ..

    • You can also use Photoshop design and production templates in Dreamweaver, and gives the effect is more convenient. Personally, I prefer Dreamweaver is the best .

These are two different software. Mainly Photoshop is for graphics.
And Dreamweaver is for web designers and web developers.
  • Photoshop and Dreamweaver both have the same importance .
  • Combine them, photoshop for design and dreamweaver for CSS/HTML/PHP coding, both are perfect for design and complexity of any website

  • DreamWeaver is one of the best software of Web design. It is very useful to get a perfect dersign software of photo editing.
  • Here the main intention and the concentration is on programming, so i obviously use/recommend Dreamweaver. And with the photoshop we'll not be able to edit, write the codes. We can just design the templates, cut into slices and export. So, Dreamweaver is my Answer!
  • Hello..
I think it will depend on your individual needs....
  • Adobe photo shop is for editting photos while Macromedia Dreamweaver is to create websites with. It is preferably for making website to use Macromedia Dreamweaver or update it to Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 would be better.
  • Dreamweaver and Photoshop a completely 2 different applications, Photoshop is used to edit images or create design/layouts for a website.

i think you have misunderstood what the guy said. he is talking about the design not the developmental part of the website.
  • ? Photoshop and Dreamweaver is different software
  • I use both of them. I use Photoshop to create/edit images for designs. And I use Dreamweaver to create/edit HTML and CSS designs.
  • I have been using Photoshop and Dreamweaver and both software are very useful to my designing and coding things.

  • According to me both are the different things dreamweaver is for html editing and photoshop is making design so we cannot direct compare both of them
  • I guess this guy just draws layouts !?

    • I use both although staying familiar with Photoshop has started to get a little tricky.
  • I use dreamweaver and photoshop together...generally use photoshop to render up the mockup of graphics and then transfer it out to dreamweaver to impliment basic SEO integrations and also imput my iFrames and such...
  • The question is wrong. You don't compare DreamWeaver and PhotoShop. Compare DreamWeaver with NotePad++ for example and compare PhotoShop with FireWorks. Your professional friend is not professional if he was comparing the two together.
  • Photoshop is a powerful graphical purpose software. Using plugins or without plugins you can create or design graphical contents or edit them. but Dreamweaver is used for designing pages. You can use graphical contents created or edited from PS here.
  • I use Photoshop for my graphic designs... for logos, headers, ebook covers, etc...
I then use WP instead of dreamweaver, gets the job done faster. It usually takes a little time trying to conceptualize a page design while the themes in WP makes it easier.

    Photoshop,
it's easy to design website ,
but need to convert it into html and css,
on that case Dreamweaver is essential.
  • Both of them are different in nature and usage.
    I prefer photoshop
  • Photoshop + Notepad++ or Vim.

If there was a WordPress IDE available, I'd prob use it. However there isn't that I'm aware of... and why create my own php CMS when I can use one that has 11 million users creating tons of free open source code everyday.

Seems a little counter productive. Sure if I was going to create a clients massive system that needs to support 500 staff plus a massive relational database, then I'd probably WANT to do that, but being I don't have clients that need that and I'm just selling crap online... WordPress is the way to go.

    Photoshop & Notepad++ for me

I was talking to this guy who has a successful programming business and he only uses photoshop for designing his websites. What do you do? I personally use dreamweaver but there really is a lot more to that program that I will ever use, so I am thinkin' I may try something else.
