I need help with pages and category's for my site.

It's a review site and I will be reviewing a good number of products in a niche which will be updated for the foreseeable future.

Does using category's for each type of product or brand of product affect search engine ranking, compared to using a page for each product brand or type.

Pages I understand should only be used for about, privacy policy, contact and so on.

I hope this makes sense.
Thanks.

    What platform are you using?

Categories, Tags and Labels ALL help SEO in the same way that they help people navigate your site.

I think your question is about Pages vs Posts, right? With wordpress you can actually install a plugin (easily) that add's categories to your pages. However, you should Google "Wordpress Pages vs Posts" to get a better understanding of which will suite your needs.

in my opinion, posts are better for reviews. And categories + Tags are best for everything.

It depends on how many products you mean when you say 'a good number of products'.

If the number is so great that your menu would look like a mess if you had them all as pages you have two options:

    - Either use the child pages function to group related products together under a parent page (this would cause the parent page to appear in the menu and the related pages to appear as a drop down)

    - Or give your categories names such as 'Product 1 Reviews', 'Product 2 Reviews', and so on, and then write your reviews as posts in the appropriate category.

If you choose option 2 you will need to keep your categories tidy and make sure they're displayed high up in your side bar. You could also add them under a parent page in your menu.

Both of those options would help people and the search engines find the review they're looking for.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

I also think posts would be better if you have a lot of different products.

Thanks for those reply's people, that's helped a lot, and helped me make my mind up.

One more question though - breadcrumbs. Has anyone any experience using the breadcrumbs by yoast plugin-in.

It shows above my posts as - you are here- Home - Home - Category name and really it should be Home - Category name.

    Any ideas?

Yoast BreadCrumbs is outdated and has been succeeded by Wordpress SEO by Yoast. There is also BreadcrumbNavXT, but i have never tried that one specifically.

Due to the nature of posts, normally breadcrumbs are not needed. unless you are using sub categories and sub-child (sub-sub) categories. However, i don't see how that is practical with reviews.

      Good luck.
