Help restoring Wordpress

I need some serious help with a Wordpress site.

I was moving a site from one URL to another on the same server, which worked perfectly at first. I copied all of the files in the FTP, changed the URL in the Wordpress General Settings to the new one, then moved all of the files to the new URL. It was working fine on the new URL and looked just like the old one, so I went in and deleted Wordpress on the old URL and it destroyed everything on the new URL. Now I have no idea how to get it back and don't know why deleting the old database would've affected the new one. There are still some images coming up from the old site but none of the content is there anymore. Is there any way to get the content back now that the old version has been deleted? And why would deleting the old version destroy the new one?

Can anyone help? Please?

  • Sending you a PM
  • It sounds as if you did not back up/restore the database.

If you do not have a database back-up, contact your host immediately to request a back-up.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • There is a lot more - as you're finding out - to moving WP to a new domain that just moving some files.

Did you create a new database for the install on the new domain? Did you change the wp-config.php file to refer to the new database?

Hopefully you'll be able to get a database backup from your webhost - which you should have done yourself before you started, by the way - but if you can't, there's not a whole lot you can do other than starting over.

  • When moving a Wordpress site, you have to make sure to export the database. Looks like you may have missed this step.
  • PM me.. May be I can help you...

Anyway... It seems you did not create a new Database, if so, contact with your hosting provider immediately may be they can help you to restore the deleted database.
  • Hey dude pm me .
    I've some idea to restore.
  • I think it'll be best to go to the Wordpress.org forum. Plenty of guidelines of Wordpress experts there.
  • As long as you didn't delete the old database and have the files in the new url, you can restore the website. I helped few people having similar issues and I can help you out. If you are interested in, please send pm.
  • What is all this "PM me" crap?

If you people have help to give the OP, give it on the thread where everyone can benefit, especially those who may come along later.

This isn't the place to come trolling for work.
  • Maybe they just want to have some money for help ?
  • Check the config file. If you did not update the database settings then it will be looking for the data on the old database and by deleting the old database then everything disappears if you did not change the config file to point to the new database. The file you want to look for is called wp-config.php
  • Thanks to everyone here for your help. I contacted my hosting provider and was able to restore the database from their back up files...luckily. I've got it back on track but have learned a VALUABLE lesson in moving Wordpress databases. Thanks again to everyone that responded.
