Need help starting a classified ads-

I'm interested in setting up a classified ads for a specific niche, but don't know where to start. Is there a program that will automate the task to minimize manual upload and maintenance when the number of advertisers requires it?
Does anyone have experience with running classifieds - what do you use, how did you get started, that sort of thing...

    Have you looked at something like

    noahsclassifieds (dot) org

    It comes standard with most hosting accounts via fantastico installer. I have only briefly worked with it but it seems like a solid script.

      Yeah, I did find that one and I also found ikiclassifieds.com. I guess a big thing for me is being able to fully customize the site. I want it to look and feel exactly the way I design it. And I need it to handle large volumes of traffic.
      Were you able to do this with noahsclassifieds?

          Hello,

          Matching the look and feel of your website should not be a problem since Noah's Classifieds is completely template and CSS driven which makes its customization highly flexible.

          As for the traffic, the script is robust and tested in the real world. It would be more a function of your hosting company and hosting package that you have.

            You sound knowledgeable with NOAH. Do you know how much maintaining is involved with that program once the number of visitors/ad posters goes into, say, the hundreds or even the thousands? I need to be able to maintain the site myself without excessive hours involved, no matter how big it gets.

              I believe the script does a lot of the management for you. Updates can be sent via email but I have not worked with such a large user base. But I know plenty of large websites run it with many users.
