Thank you for the list admin! I am searching for a shopping cart but have yet decided on one. Does anyone have any experience with a shopping cart while using drop shipping? I would need a shopping cart that is able to import csv or xml product files and export invoices so they can be emailed to the distributors. I also want a shopping cart that can be easily customizable so it can match my current theme of my website. Any thoughts which would be best?

I have only used Zen cart and Magento.

zen cart was a nightmare. It is the most horribly designed clunky thing I have seen in a long time. I truly don't understand how anyone can say it is simple.

The directories are a nightmare. There is no logic to where any of the code is stored. I delete something from the default template when I have another template installed and am using, and it breaks the site.

Magento, this is often used in commercial development projects and for some reason it does make more sense to me and is easier to use. I really like Magento a lot. It does have a learning curve but it wasn't too bad for me. The files are easy to locate and edit. The menus make more sense.

I used to exclusively use open source shopping carts, but I no longer do. The problem with open source carts is that you don't get automatic updates to keep your website secure & up-to-date with features and you also cannot accept credit cards on site and still be PCI compliant. For those 2 major reasons (and many of smaller ones) I think it's best to just pay for a premium shopping cart that includes your web hosting. (just my 2 cents!)

I have tried a number of opensource shopping carts lately. I eventually settled on a rather odd one as I really liked the admin mainly. I also found that some of these opensource shopping carts are extremely difficult to create new templates for and this was a real no no for me. The one I used was this one:

AlegroCart - Free open source E-Commerce shopping cart

The demo is horrible really but within the package are more modern templates and you can copy and then rename them to make your own. Below is my own site I created in the last few days:

    APet4Life Open Source Shopping Cart

As I mentioned above some of these opensource shopping carts are very difficult to work on so you might have to budget for a new theme. Even then altering it to suit might well cause other problems down the line.

If I was considering another shopping cart for another site I would take a good look at Prestashop as that one seems to be very similar to the one I choose above. It is also well supported with loads of themes available and I think it is quite easy to make your own too:

woocommerce is also an amazing shopping cart and integrates with WP sites. I would say it's less hassle since most of the people here have a WP site. You can usually use it for free and most features including downloads are provided. if at all you can spend a few dollars for another extension to woocommerce. Most are cheap for their purposes.

woocommerce has following features out of the box:
    1. fully WP integrated. add products like you add posts.
    2. Paypal integration. Just key in the details, includes IPN
    3. Subscription payments
    4. Digital downloads and sales.
    5. full of features like adding T-shirt size options simply by using the wp-admin area.

I would not quickly dismiss this plugin for wordpress. It allows you to keep the existing blog/site and yet provide an awesome shopping experience for customers.

Another vote for Opencart. I started using it for my own business about 2 years ago and I am so pleased that I chose it. I like to think of myself as a fairly accomplished PHP programmer and found it immediately customisable. I have taken the core code of Opencart and completely modified it to fit around our business model. I am still continuing to add new features to our shop on a daily basis, and this week started work on an iPad interface for it (web based). Some of the modifications I have added were; Third Man data fetching via XML for SagePay anti-fraud results so we don't have to login to their website, the ability to fetch Amazon orders via XML and build a true Opencart order from it, colours and models capabilities, custom fields and the best part was the addition of a dropship button on the order products page. We are able to select the products on a customers order, hit the send button and I create a PDF delivery note and HTML email and send it off to the supplier.

I very much doubt I could ever have achieved this from scratch, and I don't like add-on's as they seem to never quite do what I want. The downside is that once you have changed the code base so much you can never upgrade as such.

    That's my thoughts anyhow

    Thanks.
