VPS server help!
Hi, I have a vps account with Dreamhost and over the past 9 months or so the memory usage has been increasing and spiking causing the server to go down.

The traffic to the domains is not that great so this is not the cause. The sites on the server are Wordpress and PHP.

I have removed over 30 domains from the server which has not solved the problem.

Dreamhost support can not offer support to troubleshoot the problem.

So I would like to know if there is someone on this forum that has knowledge of apache and shell access to help me with problem, or if someone can recommend somebody that may help.

Of coarse I would pay for the service!

Cheers

  • You did not tell anything about your WP site theme name or whether it is membership site or not... Memory issue normally comes when your site use a lot of server site resource... commonly optimizepress theme and wishlist plugins create this type of problem...

Try to change the theme into default theme, or deactivation plugins... Hope you will be able to find out the exact cause of the problem...If that does not work for you.. You can PM me with your budget quote... I will be happy to assist you
  • Log into WHM and go to "Daily Process Log". On this page, you can see what processes are normally using the most processor and ram resources.
You may also use the 'top' command through SSH.

    • Hi Hostwind, Thank's for the reply.

On my Dreamhost WHM I can't find any link or mention of "Daily Process Log"

  • 99% of WordPress resource usage problems are solved by installing one of the free caching plugins, like WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache.

    • Hi Dan, all my domains hosted on this vps use PHP XCache, I also have the plugin "WP Super Cache" activated on all Wordpress sites.

      Many thanks' for your help!

  • If you want real-time analytics for your blog that doesn't use any resources, you might check out W3Counter. There's a WP plugin for it once you sign up (free), and it adds the stats as a page in your dashboard.

  • What did the DH support tell you?
How MB do you currently have?
  • As Hostwinds said, you need to start with top. If you're not sure how to use this, I would suggest you contact a server management company to manage your server or look into a managed server with your current web host.

Don't continue to blindly install things people are recommending for Wordpress, you don't even know if that's that cause of the problem. Ultimately by doing this, you're possibly adding to the problem.

  • I think it will be best to send a support ticket to Dreamhost to see what's the real problem. Perhaps your site has expanded over the months and you will need to upgrade your hosting requirements.
