server email relay lag - due to uploading content?

Hi

Not really programming talk but I hope this is a suitable place to ask...

I have a linux server which usually handles traffic and automated emails sent out on user sign up really well. about 90% of these emails are sent out within 1 minute of sign up.

However, I am currently uploading 125 GB of data to the server and noticed that the emails have slowed down hugely.

My question is if uploading data in bulk like this will affect the rate automated emails are sent via the smtp relay?

Thanks

You're probably saturating its internet connection so there's no bandwidth available to talk to the other SMTP servers.

Uploading date regarding sending bulg of email ? If it is yes,It won't take such a time,For exaample before it will send the mail approximately one min,not it will take one min 20 secs.

Thanks for the reply. I have shut down the upload of the 125 gb content so currently nothing is uploading. This was 10 hours ago and the situation has not improved.

Is a server reboot required to free up resources or should the server just settle back down?

      Thanks

I'm no server guru but in some hosting environments emails are queued by the server. Say your server has a 50 emails per hour limit, if you tried to send 100, the left over 50 would be queued until the following hour (and so on and so forth).

So it's possible that the "email queue" (not sure of the technical term) needs to be cleared out before any future emails will be sent. I'd contact your host to find out exactly what the restrictions on sending email from the server are.

^This. Most likely you're hitting the limit. The other things in combination are probably not helping either.

You say "software", so is there a sql database that's being hit at the same time you're uploading data & sending emails?

What about any logs? Can you give some more info on the software you're using as well as the specs on the server? It could be an I/O problem, memory issue, CPU problem, mail limit etc...

If you're not sure of the above, I'd suggest looking into getting a server admin. Is this a managed server or do you manage it yourself?

EDIT: If a VPS, it's possible the host node is being choked by having too many containers/VM's on it as well... Lots of variables here..
