Help - Computer adding unwanted extensions to my files

For some reason my computer started making all my word files, and text files have an extension.

My notepad files all got a .txt extension, my word documents got a .doc extension, and my spreadsheet files all got a .xls extension.

I have had this computer for years, but this seemed to happen overnight.

The only thing I recently added to my computer was the SEOquake tool bar for firefox, but I uninstalled it, and the extensions are still there.

The computer added these extensions itself, to all the files that have been on the computer for some time. However when I now try to make a new word file or text file, it tells me I must add the extension, or the document will not show properly.

Any ideas why this happened, and how I can get rid of this extension nonsense?

Thanks
Glenn

  • which operating system?

going to throw a dart and say that its windows and somehow the "hide extension for known file types" box has been unticked.

Google should be able to give you directions on how/where to find this for your operating system, just google "hide extension for known file types"

(I'm not really that good at darts lol)

  • The extensions have always been there, you just haven't been able to see them because of the switch that webpeon mentioned. The extension is the way the computer associates a certain file type with a certain application. You can't get rid of them completely - well, you maybe could, but you'd have to tell your computer what application to use every time you open a file.
