Adding A Forum To A Site

This might be pretty elementary but not to me. I've done some searching on this forum and some Web searches as well. I think I end up more confused.

I'm thinking of possibly adding several forums to a site (one forum I guess, several categories). Parts would be username and password only (sort of a membership thing) while parts would be for anyone. I've seen there are a lot of open source and paid scripts for this. I have no idea what I'd even need though.

The end product has to be easy for a non-techie to moderate. I'm not completely clueless as I can handle most stuff in my C Panel but I'm no wiz either. Thanks in advance.

  • From what I've read Simple Machines Forum - Free & open source community software if you dont want to fork out the cash for vbulletin.

    Naturally, these are PHP/MySQL solutions and will need to be integrated into your site either with a subdomain or a iframe.

  • Another idea would be to integrate the free version of s2Member® | A powerful (free) membership plugin for WordPress® with a wordpress plugin script and only allow certain user levels access to the forum.

    • For a forum? Come on, there are much better solutions for forums than a "wordpress site". - phpbb, simple machines etc etc Who are all these people who only know wordpress?

      I swear to god, if someone asked "I am looking for an enterprise level platform for e-commerce" someone in here would chime in with "wordpress!!"

      I've only ever used VBulletin and I've been running forums since 2002. You're using it now. Wordpress based forums have only ever sucked when I've come across them. It takes a bit to learn but it's always worth it. Robust, well known and just the best solution. I stopped upgrading after Verson 3.8 though.

  • You can add a forum at subdomain . like forums.yoursite.com
  • You need not know any programming to install and handle a forum. Just use fentastico or softcolus from your c panel (if available) to install the forum you want. You can the features of each and every forums there and find a popular one because they only will be easy.

    If you don't have fentastico or softcolus just download any popular form package and place it in your server in your desired location and run the installer. Nowadays you can install web aps like a desktop aps. For any details message me.
