Non-best practices webmaster

Hi,

I am working with a non-profit organization in the USA and they are afraid the current webmaster might do something malicious to the website if he catches wind that his contract may not be renewed.

I do not know if we have access to the website host. Is there a way to copy/back up
the website to keep it safe until things are resolved and use it while the new site is being built?

Thank you.

Dan

  • Umm .. log into FTP and download the site. Log into PHPmyAdmin and export the database.

  • Quite tough one but if you can elaborate more about your website, such as the software the website is running on (eg wordpress) or the database type of your website (eg mysql, mssql) or you can just link your website here so that we can take a look and tell you the exact method to back it up.

    • Dan,

If the non-profit does not have direct access to their site's files via FTP or cPanel, then they would only be able to copy certain types of files from the site (without having to go through the webmaster, that is).

It's a pretty trivial task to get a website's html files, css files, javascript files, and image files, without FTP access. But if there is any server-side scripting or databases involved (PHP, MySQL, etc), then you will need FTP access to get at that.

  • Seems pretty simple if you have FTP access.

So first of all grab everything from the FTP and store it somewhere safe.

Secondly your FTP access should be the same login to the cpanel (unless you have a separate one), go into the options panel and find myPhpadmin - find the corresponding database and export it to the same folder as your files.

And voila you've backed everything you need up.

**FYI the second step is only needed if it's a CMS type site (wordpress, joomla, opencart... etc)
  • for html fil save as complete webpage for worpress
login to wp-admin and backup wordpress
all depends on the type of web server
there are cool tools like sitesucker copier
