I switched from Rackspace to "Godaddy" and I think might site appears slower. I had to make the switch because of cost. Now the question is what are people's experiences with other hosting companies and which ones do you prefer for speed and reliability?

I did a reverse look up one of my sites (Antique Outings) and it has over 8k sites sharing the server. I would assume that would make it slower. I think Rackspace had about 100 sites on the server.

HostGator, BlueHost or some other host provider

  • I used Bluehost in the past and will never use their services ever again. I do not have anything good to note about them.
  • I have used hostgator for past many years and I have seen that they host a maximum of 500 sites per server. My current site is hosted on a server with round about 350 sites on it.

    That is like switching your BMW car for a Trabant.

    Rackspace is -of course- way faster then Godaddy. Godaddy hosting is close to the worst hosting in the world. Rackspace is a good professional hosting company.

    • I'd have to agree... GoDaddy is slow...

      I've have experience using "Godaddy," host monster, Fat cow, InMotionHosting, Amazon, Rackspace, and some others...

      From my experience, if you're just looking for cPanel shared hosting, I'd recommend InmotionHosting. They have "speed zone" technology to help speed up your websites. I've grown to like their hosting so much, I even have a virtual private server with them.

      Plus, their customer support is awesome!

  • Might be a good idea for you to use Firefox with the Firebug addon and analyze where any slow loading is occuring. It could well be your adverts are slowing the site and not the site itself.
  • That number is extremely high & you will most likely find 200, 300, 400, 500+ sites at a minimum on 1 server on any of the big web hosts. Depending on the hardware, a few hundred sites may not be a problem. 8K is, definitely a problem.

    GoDaddy preaches this 4GH load balanced crap - anyone in this industry knows you only need load balancers for shared/reseller hosting when you're jamming servers to their capacity.

    I'd suggest you find a better web host, and not one that claims to sell you unlimited storage/bandwidth.

    I would think that there is a clear winner. What are the SEO gurus using, when they are not using dedicated.

    • I can't speak about 4goodhosting but InmotionHosting is definitely solid.
    • Why not consider a home server setup? With home broadband being so reliable and powerful now it makes perfect sense. I have been running one for ages and it is far better than any paid hosting I have ever had. I'm also running quite large ecommerce sites off mine with no problems. My sites are very fast and very rarely offline. I just knocked up a new site for my computer nonsense - see signature below - which is a wordpress setup with a minibb forum attached. Just a few posts but check out how fast it loads anyways. I have run tests and the front page loads in around 2 seconds!

  • Rackspace is good, I've never had issues with Hostgator but starting to here some bad things come up. Goddady has always been slow. I think you need to find a better host that can offer both. Request a trial account maybe and test your site on it if possible with each web host.
  • I use Hostgator and am very happy with their server speed. Also Bluehost should be similar as I think they are owned by the same company. But I believe hostgator has more options instead of just shared hosting. They have vps and dedicated as well.

    • Neither hostgater / bluehost come close to hosting companies like RackSpace (and various others)..

      I have Bluehost account also (and have had tens of hosting accounts at other shared hosters) as soon as you get to medium sizes sites these hosters don't serve you very well any more .. especially if your visitors come from all over the world.. If your visitors are all from the USA this might be a different story

    8K on one server not possible. Anyways there are lot of factors affecting speed and hosting may not be the only reason. The fastest one is Amazon AWS . It has the facility to select the data center for selecting the virtual server location. So you can select the data center nearest to most of your visitors.
  • Hosting speed depend on many factor but yes it is true that 8K is really a big factor and don't know whether it can be happen or not. but rather you should quickly change your hosting than wasting your time in the long discussion as finally you are loosing many customer if you are getting good bucks from website.

    Google's page speed test measures a multitude of things that are independent of the host.
