My site loads really, really slow

23 replies
I am pretty much a novice at WP. I think I have done everything right. I have W3 cache or whatever up and running, etc. but it says my site takes just under 4 seconds to load. and i am afraid that is really hurting me. anyone have any tips? or is it just because it is so video heavy? if thats the case, i might just be stuck because thats always gonna be the case. any input would be appreciated.

site is Pro Boxing Insider - Boxing news, results and opinions

    But in addition to having a better server (unsure, was just asking), there are possibly some client-side optimizations that you could have done. Client side means "in the HTML" for our purposes. It also includes all of the JavaScript and images, etc. All of this executes in the browser.

    You images gallery plugin, whatever it is, seems to load the slowest. It would take a real professional to take it apart and make it load better though, not something you could do yourself, since you're a novice.

    Except for the plugin, the rest of the site actually isn't loading all that slow for me. Is it on a shared server?

      i just use Siteground web hosting. i guess at some point when i get bigger i need to try to get semi-dedicated or whetever, but for now that is not an option. as for html, i dont really get any of that. i dont use it for anything. at least not intentionally. the image gallery is what came with the web template i use.

      it says my site loads slower than 90% of all sites

    You probably need to ask for technical assistance at your host. It's hard for us to answer your question from here. If you're really serious about this site (it looks great by the way), you should probably get some professional assistance to help you with it.

    Whatever script is using Alexa is your main problem.

    Your markup isn't the most optimal either. Pointless div tags such as:

    <div class="thumb-twitter-entry">
    <p>By Nick Bellafatto Stating that Cotto fans would come to Madison Square Garden “to watch him [Miguel Cotto] pass the torch,” still undefeated Austin “No Doubt” Trout’s (26-0, 14 KO’s) words would ring true, as the Las Cruces native becomes the third fighter of three from the state of New Mexico behind both Albuquerque’s Bob [...]</p>
    </div>

    Why is that even in a div when you can apply the style to the <p>? Pointless waste of bandwidth in my opinion.

    Lots of different JS files and functions that could be put into 1 file/function = another waste of bandwidth.

    Lots of external files being included such as your Facebook page, is it really worth a waste of bandwidth?

    Fix your markup too! [Invalid] Markup Validation of http://proboxinginsider.com/ - W3C Markup Validator

    TOTAL_IMAGES - Warning! The total number of images on this page is 91 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Recommend combining, replacing, and optimizing your graphics.

    The OP has no idea what you are talking about, scottpool2003, as you can see by this:
    as for html, i dont really get any of that. i dont use it for anything. at least not intentionally.
    This is why I said professional assistance.

    A dynamic PHP sites (like WordPress-powered sites) are somewhat slower than static sites, but if you're using a good Web host, the difference should be imperceptible.

    If you have any extra plugins that you aren't using then try getting rid of those. The site loaded fine for me. Also your store isn't working.

    You can even try gzipping your site's contents. This compresses the page before it's sent to the client, therefore increases speeds.

    You are currently using decent web hosting service and you can stick with them but the problem is about your coding.

    Why did you have two share bars in the same page? Just get rid of it and you will notice a massive speed increase because javascript is the most problematic when it comes to performance so get rid of it.

    For my location it is loading ok and not really that slow

      it doesnt seem bad to me, but it says almost 4 seconds and is slower than 90% of sites. apparently things like that can affect your rankings and alexa. and i am aware alexa shouldnt matter, but it does when getting credentialed for fights, so it is HUGE for me

    Here are my suggestions:

    -Disable certian plugins you may have installed one by one and see if a possible scripting conflict is causing this

    -Remove some clutter from the home page and place them in other pages. The less to load at the start the less time it will take to load

    -Image optimization - you can easily get much lower KB files for your websites.

    If all that fails then consider looking into either a private server that doesn't have any one to share with or a VPS

      Try reducing the amount of posts you show on the frontpage - this will cut down the overall size of the page, will reduce amount of images and so on.

      Get rid of the alexa button, which appears to be taking forever to load.

      The tweet buttons also seem to be slowing down the page - maybe disable the plugin or try just putting a simple button instead of have it show how many tweets there are, for each article you have it has to look up from twitter the amount of tweets, again causing delays.

    You should optimize your image properly in the size and try to use small images to make your site load faster

    do a gmetrix report on your site.. it will give you all the load times for the site and the time each component part takes to load.. you can identify the issue fast..
