Recommended Wordpress plugin for forums?

Hi everyone,

What would be your recommendations for adding a forum to a wordpress site via plugin? Which ones do you feel works best and give you the most admin control overall?

  • I'd personally never work with anything that wasn't v_bulletin. I don't think that the current wordpress plugins out there are robust enough to handle the potential idea of having a lot of users.

  • BBpress is the only one I know for this purpose, there are even themes that are having predefined styles for it (let's say little more customized bbpress then default), but I never used it, and tested it with themes. Anyway, it's sure more lightweight solution if you don't need to much options for forums (like you have in vBulletin), you can go with bbpress.

    It's developed by the creators of WordPress.

      Simple Press is an extremely powerful forum. I always found it a bit of an overkill on small sites though. Can be a bit slow at times too though I think they have made it to run a lot faster now.

      If you don't intend to use wordpress for user login purposes then you are unrestricted with regard to what forum you use - as in my case ( see sig below ). I incorporated the minibb forum into my site as it is extremely fast. Not sure I would recommend minibb forum to anyone though as it lacks a lot of addons and extras, support too come to think of it. Oh well each to their own.

  • I think if you want to build forums, its recommended to use theme that special for forums. You can try some platform, such as v bulleting, PHPB, or other platform as you wish.
  • I think you should not use wordpress as a cms when you are thinking of forum, I will recomend v-bulletin script for forums.
