Building software to run online

Hi Guys

I recently bought a couple of applications that allowed me to create software without the need for programming (because my programming skills suck money balls).

All was great until I released something to a list, and barely anybody wanted to download it because it was an exe file, and they were worried about viruses, even though I had already gained their trust.

These days, I see that everything is moving away from desktop apps and instead are run online. Is there anyway I create software to run online without the need of programming language, or is it a case of having to outsource (no doubt costing a few hundred bucks at least).

  • Nonsense! There is still a HUUUUUUUGE market for desktop software. If you don't believe me, check the stats at Download.com and other similar sites.

    Is online software getting more popular than it used to be? Absolutely! But desktop software is still as popular as ever, IMO.

    I develop on both platforms. Certain kinds of programs work best on the desktop, and certain kinds work best online (ie there are certain features that are either impossible or very difficult to implement with one platform, but relatively easy to implement on the other platform, and vice versa).

    So my advice is to just use whatever platform is best for your particular program (and if you're not an experienced developer, it will likely take you a bit of research to figure that out).

    That said... if you have a quality product in a hungry niche, and you market it correctly, you should have absolutely no problem selling it, regardless of what platform you target.

    As per whether it's possible to create software without a programming language? I guess that depends on your definition of "software". All of the "click a button and a software program pops out" type of programs I've seen are pretty much garbage, and simply don't have the capability to create anything very useful, IMO.

    And regarding outsourcing... I hate to break it to you, but generally speaking... a "couple hundred bucks" isn't going to buy you more than about a half day of a good developer's time. You can find developer's who work for much less than that, of course, but you usually get what you pay for. So if you want a software program developed that is anything approaching "meaningful", then you are going to have to start thinking in the thousands.

    So... what it basically boils down to is... if you want to wind up with a quality product, you either need to learn a proper programming language, or spend money on a good developer.

    • Up until this point I thought the only thing I got respect for was my mad mountain biking skills.

      I'm not sure how much respect I deserve as a developer, as I think that much of what I've accomplished over the years has more to do with hard work and determination than actual skill! But I appreciate the compliment, Glenn (especially coming from someone such as yourself).

    I have been selling desktop software for the past 6 years. In fact, I sell a desktop software builder and have quite a few customers. No problems.

    Most of my customers have never heard of me before purchasing.

    If people are worried about installing, it may be something you're doing that is putting doubt in their mind. If you really gained their trust, then why would they be worried?

  • Phil was it Ubot studio you bought? I invested in that too, and bought it for the very same reason as you, and I've been trying to figure out how to get them to run online too.

  • desktop apps are not dead. If you look at PC sales stats, you will see why.

    people are now switching to tablets, smartphones... but nothing (up to now), can replace desktop on jobs require powerful hardware.

    But that's capable of becoming a way out so that the software is run in accordance with its function.
