VPS purchase help please

Hi!

How are you? VPS hosting is quite unfamiliar even though I've had it in the past, though do not currently.

I am not cheap, and more than willing to pay for a great product and service.

Yet I'm just wondering if the managed support is required by the VPS hosting company, or if outsourcer can do this work? Or, is server monitoring/management only possible with a dedicated server?

I have to migrate two sites to VPS from shared hosting:

1. To have the php 'safe_mode' or 'open_basedir' setting disabled so I no longer receive an error on my Amazon S3 secure download page for one site.

2. To ensure I have a 'catch all' email address available for my email software for the other site.

I am doing my due diligence to know which VPS hosting to purchase, and would really appreciate your suggestions regarding:

1. Managed vs. Unmanaged VPS. I realize the value of the managed support, but can I save recurring fees by hiring or another to help whenever necessary? Or is this not worth the risk, or even an option?

2. Do I need to pay for Cpanel every month if I am able to have Wordpress installed directly? I believe the SMTP mail functionality will still be available.

3. I believe I may need to install Centos or another system for unmanaged VPS. What else would I need to have installed? Security perhaps?

  • I've been using Knownhost for almost a year with no downtime. It's a managed vps so everything is taken care of and their support is great. They have deals on Webhostingtalk forums. hth.
  • Sounds like your not very knowledgeable in the server admin department. I recommend going with a managed VPS with a cPanel licence. Servint is good.

  • Also think about where the most of your visitors come from and get your VPS hosting in that same country.

  • I guess if you migrate to an VPS with cpanel then you wouldn't even note the difference.

    Also you may want to ask the following questions upfront before signing up,

    Some hosting companies do provide support for simple issues like above even though you sign up for their unmanaged plans.

  • I have used slicehost but switched to linode.
    Linode (owned by Rackspace) is pretty good. Linode keeps upgrading the hardware, diskspace, traffic. The VPS is unmanaged but if you have some technical knowledge you should do fine. The cost is about $20/mo + $5 for backup (2-3 images).

    With VPS you have root access so you can edit the php.ini and configure it the way you want.
    Changing the values you mentioned requires restarting the webserver and you're good.

    Some people install ispconfig.org control panel.

    I have also a dedicated server from 1and1 ($60/mo;2GB ram;250GB diskspace) which is supposed to include a license for plesk but I deleted plesk by accident when I upgraded the php .
    I wasn't going to use it anyways. It makes my server less vulnerable to plesk attacks.

  • I'd use a managed VPS from Knownhost, Media Temple or LiquidWeb.
    Don't go cheap on VPS. (You been warned!)
