Wordpress Theme question

I had my website bestwebsitesdesigner.com recently converted to wordpress.

After few days I saw that the update theme option was available.

I updated it and whole design of my website was disturbed.

I have the backup of old files but the backup is too old and I had made too many changes in design after that.

Is there any way to roll back to the theme?

    I have just tried to access your domain bestwebsitesdesigner.com but its not loading the page.Moreover I would like to suggest that there is no other way to roll back the theme.It would been helpful if you could have provided some more details in this regards so I could have checked and tried to shade some light on it.

    • Looks like you got it fixed.

      You are using a modified version of twentyeleven as the theme, you should not be updating it since the updates are not for your custom modifications but the parent theme.
      Whoever developed the site for you did not use a child theme but modified an existing one.
  • yes sometimes when you update the themes, it messes all up.
  • Yes i had a backup version on some other folder and my developer reloaded it back for me.

    So what you mean is whenever wordpress default theme is used we should make a copy of 2012 or 2011 and make changes in it instead of main default theme?

    Am I right?
  • There is a concept called "child themeing" which essentially is making your edits in a theme that overrides the parent theme styles and functions. It's not really hard to do, but usually saves you these kinds of headaches. More on child theming here: Child Themes « WordPress Codex

    Child themes allow you to update the parent theme (ex 2012) without losing the changes you made to your theme. It isn't 100% foolproof because sometimes developers change core functionality, but it beats having to redo all of the changes every time there is a theme update.
