Which language/platform would you choose...

For a directory site?

(i.e., a service directory. One with listings of various companies/individuals, instead of products. And a backend admin and lead capture system so visitors can request a service on a particular date and have companies "bid" for the work).

1. Ruby
2. Django
3. Joomla
4. PHP with MySQL
5. Wordpress with custom PHP
6. Wordpress with Ecommerce platform (i.e., one usually meant for products, like WooCommerce, etc.)
7. Opencart, Zencart, or a similar platform

    For me, it will greatly depend on the budget and time you have. If you have budget and time, sure go with fully custom php/MySQL/Jquery (possibly on some framework like CodeIgnitor) solution as per your specs...

    If your programmer prefer to go with some CMS like WP/Joomla/Drupal or any other open source solution, and he gives you good reasons for that, with saved time and cost..sure go with that, otherwise stick with lean unique code from scratch with 100% coding direction which meets your goals for this business model.

      Of course it will depend on your budget but if you consider Django, it's a great framework if you need a very specific application (RoR=Ruby on Rails too). It comes with an amazing backend admin site and there's an ecosystem of reusable apps.
      Maybe django or RoR developers are more expensive but developing time and maintenance are greatly reduced for heavily customized applications.

      Using a template (or Twitter Bootstrap) a good developer can create the basic site with user's administration, database and admin backend in half a day.

      Examples of sites created with django.
  • they all would work. Which do you understand how to use? use that.
  • I`d go with a directory script. I just don't see a point in wasting time building a directory on wp, joomla, etc. that in the end would also cost more as you`ll have to constantly update the code when those platforms get updated.
  • I choose PHP with MySQL.
  • Most likely, i would choose PHP & MySQL as well.
