White screen of death

EDIT: Problem soved...

Hey warriors,

Can somebody take a peek at this website and give me your opinion on why it is only showing a white screen. Was working fine a few days ago. Today, not so much.

  • Glad you got your problem solved - in the future, it would help if you posted the solution for others who come along later. If nothing else, it gives people in the same situation an idea of something to check when their site goes down.

    • Hi Steve, great point.

      Firstly my website is a wordpress based site. I went into the FTP and a disabled all pluggins by renaming the pluggin folder. That did not fix it, so I renamed it again to its original name. I then disabled the theme by moving the theme folder up one directory, this brought my website back online. I then went through the theme and replaced each file one by one in my theme, and found that my functions.php file was the trouble maker. I also found some lines of code in there that was directing people to a spam website.

      I then searched online for that website and wordpress issues related to it, turns out it was caused by a vulnerability in some ancient pluggin from 4 years ago that I did not even use.

  • One of 4 things is usually the culprit:

    file permissions are wrong
    a plugin is causing the problem
    problem with a theme
    htaccess is causing the problem

    These are the major causes but I've seen all sorts of things cause it. Your solution will not necessarily be the same solution for the next guy having the problem.
